If you have like a media selection, the pro of it would be that you could post a picture of Unicon or some other event that is about to happen, but it requires more maintenance.
A static banner could be cool, in that where ever you would be in media and you see the banner, you think “Hey Unicyclist.com“, which people would remember.
Peeps other than me on this forum are way way more professional and have very good control of their unicycles. They prolly have some nice action photos that could be used in a banner.
That’s true, I forgot that. The forum was done for 2 and a half months before the migration to Discourse (which I worked on for approximately the same duration ). I wouldn’t be surprised if we lost a few users during this downtime!
I thought at one point that folk had started to move from Facebook to skrrt (skrrrt.io) – I couldn’t recall the name of it earlier, but looking just now it doesn’t seem all that active.
I’ve been riding a unicycle since 1981. Unicycling boomed in the 80s and 90s, then with MUnis and trial unicycles after the turn of the millennium. However, I believe the trend is clearly declining. In Switzerland, the unicycle scene has probably shrunk by 50-75%. This is purely my estimate. Unicycle races (some of which used to have well over 100 participants) no longer exist in Switzerland. There are still a few unicycle hockey clubs and MUni riders that are more loosely organized. I think the number of active unicyclists in other countries is also declining. Therefore, there probably isn’t much to “boost.” Unicyclists are now spread out in more places; previously, there were only a few unicycle forums. This trend will probably continue.
I tried, it won’t work for our purpose. It only shows the first picture displayed from a selection of topics. I would have liked it if it could take random pictures, or last pictures from topics like Pictures of your latest ride continued.
Surely a custom theme component could be created for this, but I don’t have the knowledge to do this.
Do you think we can make some sort of ad in UDC? Like when someone buys a unicycle it directs you to here? @rogeratunicycledotcom Any ideas? Is this possible?
I have no problem with that in principal, but need to look at how to incorporate it. I have blog posts and FAQ items on where to find other unicyclists already… and you know what is high up on that list!
I can be more blunt with those links on the front of the site, maybe putting a direct link in our footer to unicyclist.com and I will look to see if there is something I can add to order confirmation email.
That’s not a bad idea. For the forum I help (and which @Canapin saved too), we did this and joined groups. When someone posts on our page, we always reply “there are more people on the forum, ask your question there” with the url.
I will start by saying I have not read through this whole thread at this point and maybe I’m being redundant, if so I apologize. I don’t want to be the police on what people do with their free time, and understand this is a gathering place for like minded people and friendships are made. In the spirit of comoradery things often go off topic. I myself come here to read and discuss unicycling content not to play unrelated games, to each their own I guess.
I personally come here to seek advice, share in others unicycling experiences and share my own experience. This space is an excellent source of information for novice riders and experienced riders to buy used equipment and get riding and maintenance advice. what I would like to see is for to people to stick around, there are far to many riders that come on, post like crazy for two or three months then disappear, we need people to stay and contribute. As far as the non unicycle posts and games I just steer clear of them, I’m just not interested .
Alot of posts just get entered as general topics, defining the topics into interest or riding disciplines may be beneficial.
I will end by stating that I really enjoy participating in this forum and visit it daily and Canapin you do an excellent job, thank you
Since most people who want to learn how to unicycle first have to buy a unicycle, one of the unicycle online shops is the most likely place they’ll hit first. If we could convince more official dealers to do something like this, even it it’s a short note like “New to unicycling, looking for tips? Check out the friendly community at unicyclist.com”.
After all they get their official dealer badge and a category to advertise new product here on the forum. So it might even be in their interest, that more people join the forum.
