How To bearing overhaul+crank removal (with pics)

Yup, that dilemma.

The hub pictured is a sub-suzue hub. It came stock on a uni from uni.com about 2.5 years ago (it came with a 1.85") kenda tire, odysee peals, and you could upgrade to air. Right above the bearing caps it says ‘Wuller’ I don’t know if this is a company, model name, or what?

The hub has no markings on it.

I haven’t taken the cranks of my Suzue yet, but when I do, I doubt I’ll be pounding them on. I’m gonna add that into my instructions though, just to get some more use out of the rubber mallet (although I will never tap them on…mainly out of spite, I suppose ;))

Thank you for putting all that effort in to clear photos and explanations. This is the forum at its very best.

Great job, Sofa!

It might be a good idea to punch the axle end before drilling it (so the drill bit won’t wander); otherwise if you just put the axle nut on part way it would keep the bearing puller from walking off the end of the axle.

Tim

WOW!

Damn obvious things

great, i love it,
pictures realy make stuff like this so much more informative, especialy for people who aren’t used to maintaining their unicycles themselves.

just a couple of picky little things,(not criticisms, more like “hints to attain perfection”)
could you make the pictures a bit smaller,

sorry about my confusion in the p.m. i sent you, i usualy check my p.m.'s before i look at the forum.

would you prefer me to link to your page or copy it to my site?

if you want it as an integral part of the faq then i’d like to have the bearings overhaul / bearing removal/ and crank removal as seperate sections

and i have some annotations i’d like to add, if you want i can send them to you, or if you want the page on my site then i can add them.

if you want i can do the monkey work.

keep up the good work sofa.

and anyone else whose doing major surgery on their unicycle should follow sofa’s eccelent example and get it included in the FAQ. with lovely pictiures!

p.s. its not an n.k. hub, they are a bit more suzue like, but have ribbs on the axle in the middle, and n.k. stamped on them.
the hub in question is generaly refered to as a tia (as in tiawan) hub or IMP hub. there not that bad as hubs go, i’d say they are a “standard hub” and a suzue or n.k. is an upgrade.

in my opinion “CREAK” sound nicer than “SNAP”

and my profile hub still dosent squeak despite its now rather dog eared appearance, and history of abuse.

p.s. i’ll link your article to the faq today, untill/if we make any changes to it.

I’m glad this will be part of the faq, that’s where this type of information belongs. Excellent work, Sofa! If not for bearing overhaul, then for anything to do with getting your cranks and bearings on and off.

Keep up the good work!

I’ll seperate them, and shrink the pics for ya. whatever you want to do, link it, or make Your own from it…you’re the FAQ man (and thanks for that, BTW)

just seperate them and shrink the pictures a bit. it’ll be great.

i’ll add some other peoples recomendations about putting cranks on too.

thanks

i’ll just link to them for the mean time, theyre looking good.
thanks for adding the thumbnails, its much faster now.
