How does the Alex DX32 Downhill Rim measure up?

Hi,

I’m looking for some feedback from those of you who ride the Alex DX32, and have also abused a Doublewide.

How would you compare the rims ability to 1) stay true, 2) resist collapse and 3) resist pinch flats. Much has already been said about the Sun rim regarding these qualities- how does the lighter Alex measure up?

Thanx,

Christopher

Hi,

I switched to the Alex DX32 rim about 8 months ago. Here’s some input:

Both are just fine- I’ve had no problems with the 24" rim going out of true at all.

>and 3) resist pinch flats.

I think the doublewide might be a bit better here, but I’ve only noticed that when using a Dyno
Fireball tire (which has really thin sidewalls). I haven’t noticed any difference with the 3"
Gazz.

Also, the Alex rim has a much better braking surface if you use brakes. Also, because it’s
slightly narrower than the Gazz, your hydraulic brake housings don’t stick out so far outboard of
the fork blades. This narrowness means it does have a slightly higher tendency to fold the tire
if you are hopping sideways up a hill. But if the tire pressure is sufficient, then I haven’t had
any problems with this either.

It is noticably lighter, and overall I definately prefer it.

-Kris.

Re: How does the Alex DX32 Downhill Rim measure up?

We have been using the Alex rim for quite some time in the UK on the trails
unicycles and it has shown to be very durable, although I know it is a
slightly different story when it comes to bigger wheels.

Kris, It is interesting that you are using the Dyno Fireball tire, it is
what we fit on our Max Tractions as standard, although in the UK it is
branded as a Contra, I love the way it clips on to the rim, very good for
low pressure.

I’m using it less since I switched to doing most trials on a 20" and got a Coker for road riding,
but I still think it’s an awesome cruiser tire and 24" trials tire.

If it’s branded as a Contra in the UK, does that mean that it is still available even though
Dyno’s are no longer available?

Kris,

My apologies, I am getting my Dyno’s mixed up it is the Leopard that is the
Contra not the Fireball. Wish the Fireball was available

Re: Re: How does the Alex DX32 Downhill Rim measure up?

The Contra tyre on the Max Traction Uni at the UK source resembles the Gazz, not the Fireball- false alarm!
