Im still learning to ride backwards, but i found that i usually travel further when i put more of my weight on the seat. I would say just make sure your not lifting up too much as that can happen unconsciously.

I just finished my 4th day practicing riding backwards and I’m starting to get far enough that my pedals are unscrewing from the crank. Is there anything that anybody else does to prevent that other than not riding backwards too far before riding forward again to tighten the pedals?
