Hello From Southern Finland

I am Ville from Southern Finland. I am a little bit older (about 46y) and a complete beginner, only 6 or 7 hours of training behind me. I have managed to learn to ride straight and to free mount somewhat consistently. My ambitions are towards trials, but I know that I have long journey ahead of me.

I bought unicycle because I miss skill based MTB-riding, but my circumstances do not let me do longer MTB-rides anymore. So it was between trials bike or 19" unicycle. I tought that unicycle is more versatile, so here we are.

I bought Impact Athmos beginner trials uni. Saddle is creaking, but otherwise I am very happy with it. I love, that I do not have to oil or wax chains!

My current gear quest is to find right saddle height. My inseam is 86,5cm and length from top of the saddle to the top of the pedal in 6 o’clock position is about 83cm. My bicycle muscle memory says that my knee angle is still too sharp, but I do not know. Maybe I lift the saddle a litlle bit in the beginning of the next session.

I am also doing some research for good knee and shin guards. Now I am using hard football shin guards, which have done the job. Maybe KH Percussions in near future. Altough local extreme sport shop is clearing G-Form mtb knee pads and shin guards…

Welcome! Seat length is for the most part personal preference, but I would recommend your knees being just a little bit bent. Having shin guards especially as a beginner is a good idea. At some point you might not need them as much.

Good luck

Welcome to the forum, and to unicycling in general! :slightly_smiling_face:
One thing to keep in mind is that in unicycling, everything is subjective to the user. What works best for one may not be that great for another. I rode with the G-form pads for a while, but eventually went back to the hardshell types. Maybe I just fall too hard!
Cheers!

Congratulations on finding the fun of unicycling. Welcome to the forum.

Always wear a helmet. As you get better at riding, your gear requirements will probably change. Don’t feel bad for trying some gear and then realizing you need something else later. When I started I had to realize that very thing for myself.

I look forward to seeing some photos of your rides. :+1:
