Hello... Again

Hello, I’m Sam.

I’ve been… vacant… for quite some time. I started unicycling back around 2006/7(?)

I was extremely dedicated to unicycling for probably 5… 6 years or so until I became more engaged with other things.

Some of you might remember me. I rode Lands End to John o’Groats on a 36er when I was 15, and have been fortunate enough to ride MUni with Kris Holm in Vancouver; I say “ride with” loosely, I couldn’t keep up. At all.

Anyway, in the process of trying to sort myself out, I’ve started university and was chuffed to find a small group who play unicycle hockey.
so,
I’m back.

Welcome back, Sam! I’ve never tried unicycle hockey. It sounds like fun, but maybe not so much with just one player. It’s great that you’ve found a group who do it. Have fun and let us know how it goes.

Yeah, my impression is that unicycle hockey is more available in other countries than in the US. The NYC metro area has 20 million inhabitants, but unicycle hockey is only played once a year here, and most of the players come from far away. Same for unicycle basketball, which I think I like better, though I’m not 100% sure because I so rarely get to play.

In France, every city has at least one unicycle basketball team, and even some small towns do. Puerto Rico defeated France recently, I think, but I don’t know any details.

I know! I am dreaming about uni-hockey or basketball. Unfortunately I live in a fairly small town USA, but maybe can get enough recruitment for some small-size games. How do these groups get started? Put up fliers or via unicycle clubs or what? I’m working on just getting a “try unicycling” day going, so lightyears from actually getting any sort of team together, but it would be cool to hear how other groups have started (to see a gym full of unis would be amazing–I haven’t experienced that yet…).
