Hello
As it gets dark so quickly now I’m finding my self doing muni rides at night and I’ve become tried of holding a torch. I was wondering if you guys had any knowledge on cheep(ish) head torches that were of good quality.
thanks in advance

Go to any outdoors store and have a look around, they’ll most likely have a bunch.
I don’t even know the brand of mine, I’ve had it for so long, so I can’t really help you with specifics, sorry.
I had a tour around my local major shopping center I suprisingly diden’t find anything, I may be able to check else were at some point. Untill then I’m just looking if anybody know of any good ones.
Most of the hardware chains, like Lowes and Home Depot carry several different LED ‘head’ lamps. Some are built into the bill (brim?) of a baseball cap, some are just elastic with a small packet on the front.
If any of them actually illuminate the path more than a few feet, I’d be suprised.
Try a miner’s helmet!
(The UK doesn’t have Lowes or Home Depot… Do you have a store that supplies building contractors, carpenters, ETC? That’s were you’ll find 'em!)
I’ve bought stuff from this co.: http://www.qualitychinagoods.com/ (I think someone here suggested them). Search for “luxeon” torches or headlamps.
The problem is that a torch will either illuminate a large area badly or a small area well (or at least less badly). A typical headlamp does the former, a well-focussed torch will do the latter. Some have adjustable focus so do both in one instrument, but they’re not so common.
This http://www.qualitychinagoods.com/3w-3-led-headlamp-p-313.html looks as if it might be a good choice. Don’t forget that you’ll pay VAT on purchases over £18 (roughly US$36). A torch with regulated power supply will give a more consistent beam than an unregulated one.
A light with a 1W or 3W Luxeon LED will work. The 3W lights are brighter but use more battery power and the burn time will be less.
I have a 1W Luxeon light that I use on my road bike and sometimes on the Coker. It’s bright enough for road riding. May be bright enough for muni depending on trail conditions and light conditions.
One thing to check is the type of battery used. Some use photo lithium batteries that are rather expensive. Something that uses alkaline or optional NiMH rechargables would be better unless you want to go broke buying batteries.
Here’s an example of a 1W Luxeon LED light that would work. Martin’s link looks like a better light though.
Course the purpose built bike lights can be better but they’re also more expensive.
im to lazy to buy a headtorch…so i just use my ipod’s light whilst its sitting in my armband…it works brill…
Don’t put a torch on your head. You’ll set your hair on fire.
if you want a decent headtorch that is pretty durable try checking out some of the outdoor brands like “Petzl” they make a headlamp called the “tikka” ive had the same one for about 3 years, you can get them in 3 or 5 LED’s. they arent too pricey either. they take 2 AAA batteries and have about 30 hours run time i think… any way good value
dumb Amerikan…
i agree
Dumb Englishman. Everyone knows a torch is something you set on fire.
dumb American, he’s from Idaho
I meant dumb Englishman who doesn’t know what a torch is.
I already knew James Potter was dumb.
Get a flashlight and tape it to your helmet.
Tried and failed haha . And my currents cuts out in the middle of pitch black woods. I’ve checked ebay.co.uk and have found tons selling at £3. I’m gona get one of these and see how they fair.
