- I regularly ride one
- I occasionally ride one
- I have tried once
- Iâve never tried, but Iâd like to
- I wouldnât even touch that thing with a 10-foot pole
Really it sounds fun, though it doesnât deserve the name âunicycleâ. It should have its name changed.
Iâve tried only once, during a group night ride in Paris, maybe 7 years ago. We crossed the path of an electric unicycle representative, riding it and wearing a suit.
He was kind enough to let us all try this thing. I rode it for only one minute but I was very impressed by how easy, nice and smooth it feels to ride this.
Iâm bored these days and not motivated enough to ride my regular unicycle. I wonder if I should buy an offroad electric unicycle and risk my life on dirt trails around where I liveâŠ
Repent heathen. Return to the single wheel path of virtue.
You can come and ride in Senart forest with us if you get one.
This is my friends son
I own one (inmotion V8), that I havenât use in two years, and it is really fun. Mine isnât too fast (30 kph max without the âlegalâ speed limit), which is a good thing, going 80 feels way too dangerous without proper motorbike gear.
I mostly used it for freestyle and some MEUC (no idea if this term exist).
I wouldnât pay hundreds of euros for it, but I got it for 200⏠and basically destroyed it (it still rides fine, but it makes a lot of noises).
Itâs a bit far from Rennes, but why not one day if I have the chance!
An used one?
Do you have any advice for me if I were to buy one? Buy new/used? Where?
A standard or offroad one? Offroad is appealing, but I feel it wouldnât be reasonable to start with this
Any very recommended entry-level model?
As for the protective gear, I only have wristguards, helmet (with a chin guard). I also have a motorcycle jacket, even tho I donât ride a motorcycle
How much is your insurance cost?
What about the 25 km/h speed limit? Does you feel like it limits you when riding?
I rode a V8 for a couple of years and itâs the perfect freestyle wheel!
I love the V8
For me that wheel is a real euc, portable, lightweight and practical.
The problem is the euc manufacturers started catering for the American market who wanted bigger and more powerful wheels.
Now an euc is practically a one wheeled motorbike and all the charm of the original idea is lost.
What do they mean by âpar constructionâ?
I would suggest a Gotway MSX with 1600 wh battery.
Not too heavy at around 22 kg
It rides very nice with a top speed of around 60 kph. Which means if you ride around 30-40kph you are very safe and wonât stress the battery causing a cut off.
With an off road tyre itâs amazing in the forest.
Cheap on the used market compared to new wheels.
As for Police, iâve dragged raced a police van before lol
The French police are generally cool with euc riders as long as you look like youâre well protected.
For insurance it can range from a few euros up to 20 euros a month depending who you go with.
I definitely donât want to break the law, fine or not. Seems like it must not even be able to go faster than 25 km/h. Even if you use it on private land, you wonât be allowed to ride in town or on a road if it can go faster.
At least thatâs what I understand from the site I linked
Forget the 25 kph it makes no sense on a wheel with a gyro and is very dangerous to limit the speed.
If you ride at 25 kph and hit a bump or a hole the motor has to give more power to keep you balanced. If the power isnât there the motor will cut off causing you to fall in front of cars.
If you limit the wheel by causing the pedals to tilt you back at 25 kph that is dangerous too.
If they tilt back when youâre not expecting them to you can fall as well.
Iâve had cars drive behind me so close i could turn around and touch the cars.
You need the extra power to get out of tricky situations.
25kph is a nice speed to ride and you can choose to ride at that speed.
But sometimes you need more power in reserve when needed.
Itâs best just to set your wheel to beep when you reach 25 kph so you know what speed youâre going.
I bought mine through this website. They have many different EUCâs
But the EUC itself was shipped from Bulgaria. It had to make a long trip to end up at my doorstep.
The KingSong S16 Pro.
Because they are not allowed on the road in NL, there is no insurance company who sells insurance for an EUC. I dunno what would happen in case of an accident.
Yup, I was riding my 20 freestyle uni, and a guy asked me if I had ever tried an EUC. He let me try his, and after 5 minutes or so, I was riding with one foot. He ended up selling me a spare EUC he had bought broken for 200 ⏠and fixed. It had 6000 km when I bought it, and now has maybe 300 more kms and not a single piece of plastic not broken due to my practice of freestyle and offroad.

As for the protective gear, I only have wristguards, helmet (with a chin guard).
I usually ride it with a helmet and thatâs it (on offroad). For freestyle, I just were chinpads, not for safety, but to be able to rest my chins on the casing of the wheel and ride with both feet on the same pad. Since I donât go fast with it, I donât need any more protective gear.

How much is your insurance cost?
I donât have one specific for EUC.

What about the 25 km/h speed limit? Does you feel like it limits you when riding?
It doesnât really feel limiting in offroad and freestyle. On the road, it is reached in no time, but going faster is scary (I did it a few time with landed wheels and really didnât feel safe).

What do they mean by âpar constructionâ?
I think it means something like âit is the wheel that limits your speed, not you, and you canât change it on the goâ. Mine (as well as most wheels I think) is speed limited at 25 kph by the app. I have to be stopped to change the speed limit (and I have to certify that I am not on an open road to go beyond 25).

If you limit the wheel by causing the pedals to tilt you back at 25 kph that is dangerous too.
If they tilt back when youâre not expecting them to you can fall as well.
I basically set my limit to 16 km/h. Then by 19-20kph, it will tilt back, but before that speed, it will sound alarms, so I will never be taken by surprise. I reckon if you want to go flying with the EUC over bumps and what not, you shouldnât limit the speed. But Im an old scared guy
Itâs very nice cruising at those speeds
Hey @Aurelien, do you think it would be possible to try it for a bit next time I go to rennes?
Guys, how fast do you think you usually go when off-road?

Mine (as well as most wheels I think) is speed limited at 25 kph by the app
I browsed randomly on https://www.gyroroue-shop.fr and the several electric unicycles I clicked on are sold in 2 versions: A regular, non-limited version, and EDPM (Engins de Déplacement Personnel Motorisés) version, suitable for riding in public places and roads, which are all limited to 25 km/h.
This makes me suspect they canât be unlocked as easily as just touching your smartphone screen, but I know pretty much nothing about it so⊠I need to search more, or maybe you can share some knowledge.
Iâd also be interested to know if an unlocked (in the sense of legal regarding French law) unicycle can be locked again and vice-versa.
Not that I care that much about it, but without being dramatic, I donât want to die, I donât want to kill, and riding offroad will always be slower than on road.

Hey @Aurelien, do you think it would be possible to try it for a bit next time I go to rennes?
Absolutly, even though I donât think I will go to Rennes anytime soon.
You could try it if you come to Cherbourg though (june 8th for the last man muniing for exampleâŠ).

I donât know for EUCs other than the one I own, I am definitly not a pro about that, I just enjoy hurting my EUC by doing stupid shit with it.

So my EUC isnât allowed to be ridden in France. Luckily France is too far away for me. Last time in Paris I got a fine for not having bought a metro ticket as it was unclear to me how to pass the gates with a pram with a baby. At other stations where the police wasnât checking, the students just hopped over the gates without paying. But me a foreigner had to pay the fine.
