Over a month back, I followed the recommendation included with the Harbinger wrist guards, and washed them. Ever since, dye from the guard’s strap have stained my wrist after each use- not always easly removable with soap and water.
I have concerns about the toxisity of the dye used, and have writen Harbinger about it. I had hoped to post here after hearing from them, but they have yet to respond.
Untill info is provided about the nature of the dye, I can not recommend Harbinger. While they provide great protection from impacts, it has not yet been determined if they protect against heavy metals absorbed from dye laden swet.
I think the Harbingers are fine - just don’t wash them (too late for
you,
but not for others.)

This is something I’ve been wondering about. I’ve never washed my Harbingers, but they are getting really stinky. They stain my rists also, even though I haven’t washed them.
What are the washing instructions you have? I don’t think I have the original packaging. Has anyone else washed there Harbingers?
I wash my Triple-8 Hired Hands in leather soap. A lot of black die runs,
and I
used to get a bit of staining on my hands. I’ve washed them a dozen or
more
times now, and they no longer stain.
Rhysling,
I thought the black dye on my hands was just a reaction with my body
sweat . I used to get mine wet nearly every ride. They were always
disgusting. When I wear bike gloves they get wet too, but my hands stay
clean. I wish I had the protection of the harbingers without the gross
mess! Has anyone tried any gloveless splint type guards ? Or maybe a
harbinger type glove without the mess?
Keep in mind that I sweat a lot on my rides…maybe I should try the
harbinger gloves and sweatbands.

Despite having asked repeatedly and explicitly for the Material Safty Data Sheet on the dye, they have neglected to supply it- or even acknowladge the request.
However, they did send this statement and offer:
Some observations:
Of the people I know, 100% have had dye leach and stain their skin. The statements made about this being a possable side effect of an unusual PH strikes me as political. I think this is an effect of TYPICAL chemistry- and the recommendations, while usefull- make you wonder why the steps advised for setting the dye were not performed durring the manufacturing process.
Their offer to replace the product was genuine. I for one will attempt the recommended process; I don’t want new guards with fresh dye to leach out- nor do I want something for nothing. I think the wrist guards are GREAT, and I payed for one set- not two.
Lastly (and most importantly): there are plenty of dangerous, non-metalic chemicals derived from plants that damage things like your liver and can be absorbed through the skin (especialy in the presence of a leaching agent). I’ll know if I should feel better (or worse) when I’v seen the MSDS on the dye; producing it will generate more confidence in the product (and company) than statements of ‘Trust us- it’s safe!’.
Hopefully I will not have to keep you posted of any new developements, as I will invite the folks at Harbinger to participate in this thread.
The nice folks at Harbinger have decided to ignore requests to identify the dye. I’m not sure if OSHA or the Better Buisness Buero is the appropriate party to contact. Any recommendations would be appreaciated.
