It was a beautiful Halloween here in California today. Riding home from
work, I got a really nice comment from a guy on a full suspension bike on
the trail: “Now THAT’S a unicycle!” That was the good part. A little
later, I looked ahead and saw a 5 or 6 year old boy riding alone on his
bike. He looked up and saw me and promptly crashed into a wall. I was
about 150’ away and when I got to him he was starting to move, and had
that panicked look, not believing there can be so much pain in the world.
He was holding his unhelmeted head but not bleeding, looking like he
wanted to cry really hard. Soon his dad rode up and said, “Oh, how’re you
doin’? Just the head this time?” Yow.
Another guy I talked to on the way home had just seen Fat Tire Fury at a
Santa Cruz theater and really loved the section with Kris. Unicycling is
going mainstream?! Maybe someday people won’t be so shocked by the sight
of a unicycle that they fall on their head.

Did ya say somethin’ to the dad about gettin’ his kid a helmet? I had to
really lay down the law to my step-son about riding without his. I’ve
grounded him once.
I suppose that there isn’t any laws for helmets there? Seeing as people
ride motorcycles without them. :-7

i as well did some unicycle trick or treating, it seemed to be enough for people to give me candy, tho i only went to 3 houses, see as i am nearly 15, + i almost made sombody run into a lamp post today, they were watching me unicycle and talking on his cell and drinking coffee, doing all of this aswell as walking and came within an inch or two of hitting the cement lamp post, the guy then jerked to a stop and spilled some coffee on himslef since it was still moving foward, he proceded to curse a few times cause of the spill.

I love it! Good thing he wasn’t in a car.
It just goes to show, using a cell phone while walking can be dangerous.
Here in California kids are required by law to wear helmets when biking. I
did ask the kid about it gently and suggested less gently to the dad that
the kid should wear one. Pretty obvious in this case. Helmets are also
required here for motorcycles - even the hardcore biker guys have to wear
helmets (although they can get away with those little ones). I rarely see
motorcyclists without helmets these days.

I have to say that I am the amalgam of these two people: I frequently eat
while riding my Coker during my commute, and I use my cel phone while
riding all the time (since the total commute time is over 100 minutes). In
fact, the only time I ever fall off is when I am on the phone (bc I need
that hand for support on the seat). What I need is one of those cords
coming from the cel phone so I can talk hands-free. Then I’ll just look
even weirder, riding this alien size unicycle and talking to myself!

i very got the joy of being told off for not wearing a heltmet on my bike, the first bmx i got spent it’s first 6 months tied to my bed, cause i put a screw driver though my eye when i was five (at my party). i’ve had a guy walk into me while i was riding my giraffe, the stupid thing was i was talking to him and he was looking up at me. also seen a guy forget to turn when he got to the round about, drive over it and then slam on the breaks, rather luck there was no other traffic.
