#1 Every uprising has its progenitors. Was Mattachine a prerequisite for Stonewall? Probably not. Was it a contributing factor that provided impetus? Almost certainly. That’s from someone vague on the details of the history of these movements, organizations, and events.

While it was no a law, the NY State Liquor Authority made it a violation for bars to serve liquor to homosexuals. Mattachine, a 1966 civil disobedience wherein a group of gay men entered several W. Village bars with a written notice that they were gay and requesting service, led to the disbandment of that liquor code, and opened the gates for “gay bars.”
Since the 1969 Stonewall Riots (began when police attacked gays in the gay bar named Stonewall, and the gays kicked ass) began in a gay bar, it would not have been possible without Mattachine.
