Unicycle Sports in China

China Unicycle Association (CUA)

The China Unicycle Association (CUA) is subordinate to the State Sports General
Administration of China. In Oct. 1992, China International Sports Travel Co.
handed an application to former for developing unicycle sports in China. In the
same year a preparatory group was founded and Mr. Zhang Shuxiao was appointed to
be in charge. The CUA was founded on Oct. 1993; and approved by former China
Sports and Physical Culture Commission. Mr. Chen Zhenhuan was the director, Mr.
Zhao Yanyang was the secretary-general and Mr. Zhang Shuxiao was the assistant
secretary-general. Mr. Zhao Yanyang was dismissed on Aug. 1994 and Mr. Zhang
Shuxiao became the secretary-general. In the CUA Committee voting meeting on May
16, 1996, Mr. Chen Zhenhuan was elected the director of CUA, Mr. Zhang Shuxiao
standing vice director and secretary-general and Mr. Wang Gang (from National
Education administration) the vice-director. The members of CUA were: Wang
Yongsheng, Wang Luyuan, Zhao Shichuang, Han Zengliang, He Zhi, Wang Jingzhong,
Li Li , Wu Zhongyong. Director Chen Zhenhuan: labor union Chairman of Bicycle,
motor sports and Fancy-play Organizing Center Vice Director and Secretary
General Zhang Shuxiao: Assistant General Manager of China International Sports
Travel Co.

The relationship between China Unicycle Association, China Bicycle Sports
Association and China International Sports Travel Co.

China Bicycle Sports Association leads China Unicycle Association directly.
Bicycle, Motor Sports and Fence-play Organizing Center of State Sports General
Administration of China is the superior official organizing department of both
China Bicycle Association and China Unicycle Association. The China
International Sports Travel Co. (CIST) is the source of the China Unicycle. The
standing body of CUA is in China International Sports Travel Co. . It is in
charge of developing and daily work of CUA. There is no fund from the State
Sports General Administration. The outlay of CUA is collected by CIST. That is
the reason all unicycling events will be organized by CIST.

Development of China Unicycle Sports

Unicycle was only a performance that played in acrobatics before. There were
only a few people could ride and teach it. e$B!0e(BFirst China Teen-agers
Unicycle Summer Camp e$B!1e(B and e$B!0e(BFirst Golden Lion Cup China Teen-agers
Unicycle Invitational Tournamente$B!1e(B symbolized that unicycle would become a
sports event. More and more Chinese people accept unicycle–it was called as
Ballet on the Wheele$B!*e(Bas a sports event, especially young people. China
International Sports Travel Co. had done a great contribution to the development
of the unicycle sport in China and making it popular. With the help and support
from IUF and the influence from Japanese unicycle sports, China International
Sports Travel Co. held the e$B!0e(BFirst China Teen-agers Unicycle Summer Camp
e$B!1e(B and e$B!0e(BFirst Golden Lion Cup China Teen-agers Unicycle
Invitational Tournamente$B!1e(B with the publisher of a magazine (belongs to
Peoplee$B!/e(Bs Daily) together in 1993. All the participants from the summer
camp took part in the e$B!0e(B93 World Unicycle Great Wall Competitione$B!1e(B
which was held by IUF. This was the formal beginning of Chinese unicycle Sports.
National invitational tournament were held every year in 94, 95 and 96 and
became the high tide periods of Chinese unicycle sports. In August 1994, China
International Sports Travel Co. organized a Chinese team to participate in the
7th UNICON held in Minnesota, USA. Chinese team got 13 golds, 8 silvers and 14
bronzes. That was the first time for Chinese team to participate in the world
competition. On July 1998, China International Sports Travel Co. organized a
Chinese team (15 riders from primary schools and middle school of Huairou,
Xingcheng) to participate in the 9th UNICON held in Bottrop, Germany and got 27
golds, 17 silvers and 4 bronzes in 100m, 400m, 800/1500m, slow fw and bw, one
foot, and marathon events, and won a high praise from the members of the IUF.
During the IUF special subject meeting, the vice-director and secretary-general
of CUA formally apply for holding UNICON X in Beijing in the 2000. China Sports
and Physical Culture Commission gave the approval to China International Sports
Travel Co. to found a preparatory group of unicycle sport in 1992. The China
Unicycle Committee was founded in 1994 with the approval of the China Sports and
Physical Culture Commission. China Unicycle Committee decided to let China
International Sports Travel Co. to be in charge of its day-to-day work and
coordinate all unicycle associations or clubs in all over China. Meanwhile China
International Sports Travel Co. will be in charge of holding national
competition every year and doing the international exchanges. In present, there
are training centers in Beijing No.28 High School, Huairou Education
Administration, Xingcheng (Liaoning province), Tianjin No.17 High School,
Taiyuan (Shanxi province), Shanghai and Ningji. The Committee conducts training
class and advanced training class through out the year. In order to popularize
unicycle sport in China, State Sports General Administration of China had listed
it into the planned sports event. The National Invitational Tournament has been
upgraded to National Championship. In order to let all Chinese riders accept the
IUF rules, the 5th and 6th national championships already adopted the IUF rules
and set the events based on the principal of IUF (races, acrobatics, 10km
marathon, unicycle basketball). There were totally 4 events and 30 items in
details. There were totally 12 group cups, 10 memorial cups, 113 golds, silvers
and bronzes in 6th China National Unicycle Championship. We also set
break-record award. There were 59 riders broke 13 times the records of 5th

Present China Unicycle Sports and Its Future

Though China unicycle sports starts later than other countries, but it
developed really fast in the past several years. It is accepted to be the
one that can be performed on celebration occasions. The most attractive
examples are: 1) get-together of people in Tiananmen Square for Hong Kong
return to China; 2) China Hundred Cities Bicycle Activity; 3) Chinese New
Year TV Party (six television station) 4) on opening ceremony of 99
Kunming Expo; 5) in a parade of 50th Anniversary of the found of
Peoplee$B!/e(Bs Republic of China; 6) a training class on CCTV (channel
5). It is easy to see that unicycle sport is becoming more and more
popular and more attractive in China. China International Sports Travel
Co., as the initiator, foster of unicycle sport in China, not only made
the unicycle riding into the sports event but also did a great effort and
got a success on training riders, coach, judges and developing unicycling
equipment, doing international exchanges, making rules. In order to
improve the unicycle sport and make it more popular, CUA select the year
2000 as e$B!0e(BYear of Unicyclee$B!1e(B. CUA wants to reach a historical
  peak in the year 2000.
