freemounting a giraffe

All right, I got my roommate to take a few photos of me today… so, for those
of you working on freemounting that 6 footer, this might be of minor help.

http://lutkus.org/juggle/photos/giraffe/freemount/

description:

http://lutkus.org/juggle/photos/giraffe/freemount/jeff_fm1.jpg a pose to start
with. Notice the unicycle is only very slightly slanted forward. I use my left
hand to hold the seat post, leaving my right arm free to flail around wildly for
balance. Here you stand thinking about what exactly you will be doing in the
next few seconds.

http://lutkus.org/juggle/photos/giraffe/freemount/jeff_fm2.jpg my right foot
left the ground and is about to be put on the right pedal. I now need both hands
to hold the seat in place. Notice the seat is the one thing which is never
blurred out due to motion.

http://lutkus.org/juggle/photos/giraffe/freemount/jeff_fm3.jpg I am lifting my
left foot from the wheel. The wheel does move a bit at this stage, but with my
hands holding the seat in place, and my body weight now entirely on the right
pedal, it is okay to think of the wheel as stationary now.

[the frame the camera was not fast enough to capture] I sit on the seat, then
put my left foot on the left pedal. It is important that you sit before putting
the left foot on the pedal. In my mind, sitting and putting the foot on pedal
are two very distinct sets. In reality, it’s one motion, and apparently happens
fast enough that the camera missed it.

http://lutkus.org/juggle/photos/giraffe/freemount/jeff_fm3.jpg Having just sat
down, and with both feet now on the pedals, I wobble around a bit while gaining
my balance.

hope that was of some help to someone out there. jeff lutkus

Wow, you sure move fast! Blurring right out of the picture. Here’s some (old)
pictures where the unicycle is blurred out:
http://www.unicycling.com/garage/invisibl.htm (Yes, that’s the secret of the
invisible unicycle pics)

Great useful pictures for would-be giraffe mounters. Wolfgang Stroessner used to
have a similar set of pictures, showing him mounting a much taller giraffe. I
don’t know if they’re still on his site. It uses frames, so I can only send you
to the homepage: http://www.unicycling.de/

Yes those pictures are still there, although a little hard to find if you don’t
know where to look.

For starters unless you read German click on the button to view the page
in English.

Then select the unicycle option from the left frame and click on photos. This
will load up a frame which has a strip of pictures on their side, like a spool
of film. Use the scroll bar to scroll right and select the picture of Wolfgang
on a giraffe with a cloudy sky background.

Its right next to the one where he’s unicycling holding someone doing the splits
above his head.

This should bring up a frame which allows you to navigate through Wolfgang free
mounting a 9 and a half foot giraffe. Note this is next to impossible and
Wolfgang is one of the few people in the world who can do it.

RE: freemounting a giraffe

I probably do move faster than I need to, but part of that can be blamed on the
camera – when in rapid fire mode, it can’t use a flash, so it uses a longer
exposure time to compensate. Some nice sunny day, I’ll have to try the same
thing outside and see if it looks much better.

Thanks for the link Wolfgang Strößners page, there’s some useful stuff there,
and he seems to be an interesting person.

Re: freemounting a giraffe

thanks. I’ll have to see if I can’t find a photographer to voulenteer for
that some time. If I can find someone with a video capture board, I’ll post
some video.

I liked the photos but I think they’d be better if you make several mounts,
taking just one clear (flash) photo each time. I don’t have a giraffe, but my
son does and he needs to learn that mount!

Re: freemounting a giraffe

OK so the images are a little too blurry (4 + 5) but I think the blurring shows
some of the movment involvd, the direction the uni is moving and what bits of
Jeff are moving to obtain balance. If you have the space, what about a short AVI
or mpeg? I can help with space, video cam and capture but I can do the free
mount :o( Regards, Bob
