first Muni Experience

I had my first MUni ride ever yesterday… The first and last laps of
an 8 hour Mountain Bike endurance event… I didn’t find it difficult
to maneuver at all, I just had a few small problems with mud, and some
roots. (Stupid trippy things). The Techencial downhills weren’t a
problem, or the uphills. there wasn’t a whole lot more that I had to
run though on my unicycle than on my bike.

my unicycle is just a 24" Norco one, that’s like 4-6 years old. I’ve
only changed the pedals to BMX pedals, and put on a 24"*2.1"
tire. The seat started to hurt a bit on the last lap, but
otherwise, it was pretty good. It was also my longest ride even on a
unicycle. I’ve been riding since I was 8 (I’m 16 now) and I was pretty
confident in my ability to ride this course. Other people weren’t
but… On the biggest downhill, there were a few kids at the top
asking me how far down I thought I’d be able to get, They didn’t
believe me when I said all the way down. Somebody also videotaped me
doing it, but it’s unlikely I’ll ever get to see it.

<R>The night before (Saturday) I did a few of the crits at the pre-race
party, and a few hay bale drops. Nothing exceptional to me, but…
definately to a lot of people who hadn’t seen anything like it
before. Most of the comments I got during the crits, and my race
laps on Sunday invovled the word “awesome” expression “keep it up” or
something about missing a wheel/half a bike… When I did race a
few laps on my bike, I had a few comments on how I grew another wheel.
A lot of the old men who passed me, said stuff about me
“putting them to shame”, and sitting around during the day, I heard
people walking by saying somethings about “that crazy girl on a
unicycle” (I had forks all over my helmet as our team theme for
the race, so I was pretty distinguishable. My teammate just rode her
bike though).,

<S>Somebody did refert to my unicycle as a “unicorn”, and now I have
several more nicknames, including uni-loonie, uni-physco, unicorn-girl,
crazy kate, fork head. It was quite enjoyable indeed.

<T>this was a first for Nova Scotia having somebody doing a mountain bike
event on a unicycle, and I got a courtesy prize for it, which I though
was great! I love free stuff. &nbsp-
; &nb-
sp; I usually
take my unicycle around with me to bicycling training camps, and it’s
coming with me to Canada Games, so some of the people on the cycling
team are getting quite good at riding it, and want to pick up one of
their own. I know less than 10 people across the maritime proviences
who can ride a unicycle, so… hopefully it’s going to start to
grow. Next year at this race, I hope to have a whole team of 2 or
3 unicyclists together, and then the year after that, they might have
to have a unicycle catagory!

Most of the people in the cycling community have seen some of the North
Shore vidoes with Kris Holm in them, and they always speak about him
with reverence in the voice of that “Crazy Norco Unicycle Guy”… some
day I hope to obtain that same status.

Very nice story Kate. Sounds like a lot of fun, and being a pioneer is
great. Keep it up!

Way to go kate, I’m pleased to see that its not just us Brits who do daft
muni things in MTB race circles. When your a little older how about
bringing a Canadian team over for the Red Bull Mountain Mayhem? You need
to over 18 for that race as its a 24 hr thing, good fun tho, and we get
most of the same comments as you got in your 8 hr event ( but not the one
about Fork heads… funny that. Is that as nearly very rude in Canadian
english as it is in Uk english?)

Which of the Maratines are you in?

keep on knobblies
