Extreme Games (formerly re: (none))

I don’t know if I’m qualified to respond to this, but . . .

It’s good exposure. I hope that it doesn’t lead to turf battles or infighting
within the unicycling community (sometimes fame and money do that). Overall, I
would tend to say yes to it.

Mountain unicycling is probably one of the more action packed unicycling related
activities. It would probably take a lot better on film than some of the races
and balancing drills. I don’t know if mountain bike racing or some variation is
already included in the games, but let’s face it, (and I don’t mean to take
anything away from mountain biking types) MUni’ing is a much more gutsy
activity. On that note, I would not want to see a bunch of good unicyclists
throwing themselves into the jaws of death on some ridiculously designed,
insanely dangerous course just to get a little TV exposure. (This may sound
cynical, but I believe TV producers like things that involve more risk, blood,
and guts than skill and beauty.) Having voiced my concerns, MUni is what I think
would be the best fit.

Hi,

For better or worse, the main qualifying factor for any X-games sport would be
whether it is good visually for TV. Based on my experience with media thus far,
it is worth treading very carefully in this area because of the difficulty in
predicting the media response to what we do. Although Artistic has a lot of
parallels to flatland BMX (which is in the X-games), I agree that media would
probably be more attracted to MUni.

There has been a lot of talk in Vancouver (just talk thus far, mind you), about
how North Shore Style structures could be turned into a Mountain Bike X-Games. I
could see this working as well for uni as well because it plays into the main
strengths of unicycling, such as riding narrow beams, and looks extreme without
requiring high speeds, which is the main visual weakness (media-wise) of MUni.

Filmakers filming unicycling (except for pure trials videos) all want to see a
rolling style of MUni in spectacular areas. Hopping stuff is usually seen as
less visually spectacular except for big drops. In my opinion, we will have
much more opportunities to get MUni into this kind of venue in a couple of
years from now, because techniques are currently improving so much. When
unicyclers are regularly launching 10 foot drops, making 48" pedal grabs and
35" side hops, and gapping 6+ foot gaps, we will have a sport that would
totally rock as a X-Games sport.
