expensive crank warranty

I was looking at the raceface crank (which are expensive, like the kooka
ones) warranty : “Any product that has been modified will not be covered
under warranty. Modification includes use of bolts, bearings, or other
hardware, that do not meet Race Face specifications (to save yourself
trouble, purchase replacement parts from Race Face). Stripping and/or
re-colouring product is considered modification. Finally, using a
component without all necessary parts will void the warranty.” I was
wondering : is removing the spider considered as a “modification” ? Oli-

Hi,

RaceFace North Shore XS cranks are so dialed!!! I believe in some thread, or an e-mail, Kris Holm talked about hooking up with a unicycle form of these cranks, but it was said that if the deal was made, nothing would show till 2002. I have heard many good things about these cranks, not that I would want to abandon Profile, but RaceFace cranks for uni’s would be sweet. I would hope that they would make them with their ISIS, obviously.

So, if it all shows through, your question of warranty might be erased.

Evan

Hi,

Yes I did say a while back that I had started to work with Raceface to put
together an ISIS splined crankset. I’ve not been working on that though,
for a couple of reasons:

  1. I think it’s really cool that Profile is stoked enough on unicycling to
be producing high-end hubs. At this early stage there is little
financial motivation for them to do this so I think it’s great if they
own the market, so to speak, for at least a little while.
  2. Profile is the only company right now that can put together a hub from
stock bike parts. Raceface doesn’t make stock axles that are long
enough, and they aren’t directly involved in the hub-making business.
The Profile crank arms also rather conveniently come without a spider.
Also, non-tapered splines (like Profiles, not ISIS) are a really good
system for unicycles because everything slides on and fits together so
well. All of these reasons mean that a Raceface ISIS splined hub would
likely be even more expensive than the Profile one.

There are definately advantages to the ISIS system such as weight-savings,
and the tapered splines don’t creak. However, I think it’s worth being
patient on this one.
