Endless Winter

Yes, the :):):)'s do make it better. and yes I was just messin with ya, so :):) back.

In winter I do predominantly MUni, in summer it’s more road riding (though I can’t resist MUni in summer too). Anyone else make that distinction?

Re: Endless Winter

Winter isn’t so bad if you are properly equipped. Last year I was limited to
indoor riding all winter. This winter I resolved to get the proper gear so I
could keep riding outdoors. For me the main thing is keeping the toes and
fingers warm.

The average temperature in Burlington, VT for December+January+February was
17 degrees F (-8C). It’s been an abnormally cold winter, with morning
temperatures as low as minus 23 F (-30C) at my house in Montpelier.

But I’ve been riding consistently all winter. I’ve had some very nice rides
at temperatures below 0 degrees F (-18C). On my lunch breaks I ride around
the residential neighborhoods on the 28", regardless of temperature, though
I don’t go out when it is real windy and cold. I like to ride when it’s
snowing.

This morning I took the MUni out to our city park (Hubbard Park) and rode
the trails, with the doggies following. Most of the trails have been groomed
all winter for skiing and hiking. (BTW the park superintendent is a
unicyclist). This morning the trails were excellent and I was able to stay
on even for most of the uphill stretches.

Also our club has a nice indoor space for Sunday afternoons. The indoor
riding is a blast. Last Sunday we had 15 people riding at once. It’s a whole
different world from outside riding – you can do all the sharp turns and
spins you want without grinding down your tires.

The downside of winter:
My favorite parking lot is full of rock salt.
No daylight for riding after work.
Takes a long time to get geared up to go out.
My winter shoes are cumbersome.

The downside of summer:
Sweating like a pig.
Rain sucks.

So maybe summer is better. But winter is OK too.
