Ditto the above.
Tons of work goes into pulling off a successful NAUCC.
BIG THANKS to everybody who helped, the YMCA and people of Rapid City who hosted great Unicycling events in the Black Hills. I had a blast!

Spencer’s flatland run: NAUCC 2008 Flat Competition: Spencer Hochberg
eh wimpy ![]()
Awesome.
I want more >.<
What do you want next?
Everything lol.
Jons run, Peles, Shauns and Sams.
Then the street ![]()
I filmed everything, then rode as much as I could. i didnt notice until today that I have cuts on both legs. Oh well.
Skrobo, back it up by coming to a NAUCC, eh? If we made it unofficial and went by where he did land on a few of the attempts, we could write in 10’ 6" as the long jump. Which isnt bad for that being the first time being on a 24" in 1 year.
Man, it feels good to be home, but the trip there, all the riding, hanging out, cliff jumping, hiking, flaming puck, and all the other things that went on were so amazing. Specially last night, once we got home from the Dinner and final performance there was some music being played, and I get back there and See Arik, his friend, and two other couch surfers playing guitars, bass, drums drinking and singing, sow e all joined in and jammed out for hours.
Man, I can go on and on right now, but im starving. About 15 hours of driving. Something long.
Atwell’s and pele’s runs would be nice. And I guess then the street.
Yeah I want like everything.
I really want to see my street run…
Edit: make that runs.
The judging was horrible for the street comp. and the method of points was terrible as well. Basically it was a cast of know nothing about street judgings doing a point system of placement with prelims counting. Basically there could be ties everywhere! It’s super lame and a bad idea by whomever thought of it. Too many freestyle people trying to run how street should be run. Not going to the actually street riders.
I have all runs for street (thanks Kyla) so you can be the judge.
Scoring:
Points on place. Half the points for the placement in prelims, take full points for placement in finals. Lowest score wins.
First prelims (1/2 points), third finals (3 points) ---- total 3 1/2 points
Forth prelims (2 points), first finals (1 point) ---- total 3 points (winner)
Probably the worst method possible. However america is a lot further behind in making unicycling bigger than I thought. It was bad this year. Forrest R. you didn’t miss a whole lot.
There was music, it was just on a small boom box so it wasn’t very loud in that big gym. I was actually judging the flatland comp and I didn’t pay much attention to the music, but I think someone said it was Hannah Montana. Haha.
lol.
Shawn, I’m guessing you are a little bit sour because you didn’t win?! I’m sure if you placed 1st then you more than likely wouldn’t be complaining?! Yes the judging system isn’t perfect yet but it’s getting better and better each year and it will get there. Be sure to express you concerns with the organizers so they know what to change for next year.
There are reasons why they judged the way they did (but I don’t know them). I do think most of the judges knew street and weren’t bad judges. From what I saw, I thought and knew it was going to be really close between a couple people. It’d be interesting to see the scoring results and see how everything ended up. I know that you didn’t have a good run the first run but had a great run the second time. I think Kelly had OK runs both rounds and that’s probably why he won.
Anyways, it was nice seeing you again even though we didn’t ride much together. I was too busy doing my own MUni things. Going to Unicon? Hopefully the judging will be a bit better there!
Nah not even close. I probably tried harder things at Wuko but if you were there you would see I fell a ton of times. In the flat comp 60% of the score is consistency and difficulty is only 40% so it is better to land easier stuff and not fall than try hard stuff and fall a lot. I think its also easier to land harder stuff in a battle style comp because you always get time to rest and there is less pressure on each trick.
I had a lot of fun at NAUCC. The only thing I would change is to keep it centered around a main gym for the whole time because it is easier to meet up with people.
spencer man you had an awesome flat run. congratulations:)
i really want to see the street runs.
As far as judging, they were asking us street riders what we thought and how to make it better than it was. However it seemed none of that was truly heard. I guess they assumed that our input would be better handled in following years and this one was a lost cause to try and salvage.
As I understand it there are tons of rules and regulations that have to be followed for such competitions, and any changes must be suggested, approved and applied through a series of checks and balances by the comity before going into effect.
In this case Street unicycling is evolving faster than the U.S.A can make changes for or is willing to make changes for. This is sad, as Shaun said, Street unicycling is not growing at the rate it should be in the States. I feel this is do to how much these new ideas and new ways of riding are being held back by old rules and old standards. The fact is it will never work if we have to make tiny little changes to old rules just to please the powers in control. Street competitions will need their own set of rules and standards to work, and the best way for that is the ground up.
What I am getting at here is if the Unicycle Society of America wants to hold onto Street and gain from the growing interest in the sport through the ideals Street is bringing to it, they are going to have to make some serious changes. Number one is how they view the sport.
naucc was a good time. haha but my name is still jon atwell dont switch it to jatwell(that names reserverved for pele)![]()

and basicly everything else that happened, my list could go for alot longer
spencer, kelly, shaun, dallas, sam, and brian and everyone else who i got the pleasure of hanging out with it was an amazing naucc
P.S. do u know how many handcuffs and glo sticks we could buy with 100 bucks spencer?! ![]()
just to clear things up if anyone cares… the long jump was only 9’2"
but like jerrick said, on a few attempts Joe got well over that. He was pushing 11’ for sure. But i guess he was just getting tired toward the end or somthing.
the judgeing was alittle screwy.. i think the street comp was hard because, other then dallas, there where no street riders or people that knew street judging.
i think that the flat was judged much better being as a bunch more of us who have seen a lot of flat got to judge that comp. it was a little unnerving to hear some of the judges ask me and jerrick what the difference between freestyle and flat was.
but i gotta say… pele’s spin was the sickest trick at the comp…
it was ridiculous to see when you landed it on your second try
next time … flaming flat
when i hear that, i’m just really scared about the judging of the flatland comp at unicon… battles resolves these problems, but anyway nobody in the organisation want to listen to our opinions…
anyway great run spencer, can’t wait to see the vid of pele and jon
and can’t wait to ride with you all at unicon
