Djembe and congas are fun. I have a djembe and the percussionist in our band (http://www.last.fm/musicpages/album/index.php?id=2051866&mode=) is a really good congero (not sure if that’s how you spell it). Good fun.

I drum as well.
My setup (don’t knock it)
CB Maxx that I picked up from a highschooler for $250
only using two toms
coated Ambassadors on toms and snare
Powerstroke 3 on bass
Pearl double bass pedal
ZBT hats
18" A med. crash on the left
18" Zildjian crash on the right; bought it used at a local music shop…has the zildjian logo, but no series or anything
22" Zildjian crash/ride; same story as above…bought it used, no series, it has a really open ride sound and an awesomely full and low crash. I love it
A bunch of random cheap cymbals that were bought for experimentation but ultimately sold
It’s amazing that a cheap kit can sound passably good with a full set of new heads. And I love my cymbals.
This is my current setup:
ducks
Since I didn’t start with the drummer jokes…
How do you get a drummer out of a tree?
Evolution.
Has any one here ever used something like this? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=perc/search/detail/base_pid/445236/
I am think about geting one or something simler to add onto my 5 peace, Were would it mount?
I recently got a Evans Coated Genera dry head for my snare. I love it and that is my head of choice.
The one on this page labelled “TH684” should do the job. Do you have a sturdy boom stand? It would help.
Andrew
Hey Mike, Does that bodran go along with the ethnic clogging you do?
I’ve studied Ghana drumming from an Ewe (tribe)–about 8 different sized drums and a 2-tone bell–everyone only plays one drum or the bell.
Tim: I’d love to play a drum kit as well, but it’s not in the budget for me either. I play the djembe, too. Studied with a guy who lived in Mali (he claimed the best djembes come from Mali, due to the tree it’s made from.) He was in a group there that played for circumcisions and other big party occasions. Is that what you mean by a bush party??
Billy
im a drummer… i have an endoresment with medicine man custum drums, i play 5a size sticks and use remo smooth white heads with a power stroke 3 snare head, and evans emad bass drum head… i have 2 20" sabian aax stage crashes, a 22" sabian metal ride, sabian 16",and 12" china, 10" mike portnoy signiture splash, and 13" K/Z hats(i play with the K on the bottom, with all dw hardware, iron cobra power glide double bass pedal, with a pork pie thrown. here is a pic or my baby., 13x6 snare with two 2" vents, 12x8 tom, 14x14 floor tom, 20x18 bass drum. just look past my busted ass unicycle… hahaha no to worry im getting two new uni’s for xmas. a 28" sun and a 20" nimbus X. well thats it.
i forgot to mention that i play in a metal band here in the states called Aria… you can listen to my band at our myspace page… the first song is a live recording the rest are mastered … www.myspace.com/aria
This is my kit all set up for the recording of our album. These days I’m trying to get into the habit of playing with at least one tom, but I often have this setup for gigs where I don’t want to have to go unloading the car too much. I really need some cases…
Andrew
Hey thats a really nice set. Why don’t you like playing with toms?
My friend who unicycles with me Drums…He broke ALOT of it…tore the bass head in 2 and dented his crash symbol…popped the chains on bottom of his snare…dented the heck out of his other symbols, thank god he’s getting new symbols and a new drum head for christmas! Our band sounds horrible with his drums! i think his set is an Excell i think??? not sure.
Thanks, I like it. I was worried I would get sick of the colour about 5 years ago when I bought the kit, but I haven’t…still love it.
I don’t play toms much, but am working on it. I’m no good with them because I have never practised with them. I’ve never practised with them because they’ve always sounded bad. I now have an Evans G2 Coated head on the highest of the rack toms and the floor so I’m getting into the toms more. Having no toms has pushed my creativity with the snare bass and hats though, I think.
Andrew
Yeah I would think it would push you creatively. Because I couldn’t think of any fills with just a snare, kick, and hats, and a couple of cymbals.
I I have a 4 piece set. I will work on getting a picture up. Its actually a 5 piece set but I took the bigger rack tom off because I just wasn’t using it and it gives a little more room for the ride cymbal without that second rack tom there. Maybe if I get some new heads for the toms I will use them more aswell.
It’s funny, because I can think of plenty of fills and grooves with my mini setuip but struggle even with 10 toms in front of me!
Here’s another setup I have experimented with. The remote hats stand was good in theory (running two sets of hats simultaneously) but I could think of enough to do with two sets of hats that I couldn’t do with one to justify keeping it. The stand will go to my teacher, most likely. In one of the shots you can see my djembe. It needs tuning and I’m too scared to try. It used to be hairier than in the photo but it malted last year.
Andrew
Don’t be.
It’s starts off feeling pretty scary but you settle down with it quite quickly.
I guess it’a a bit like wheel-building.
Hey Andrew thats some really nice stuff you got going there. Does the ducktape and whatever you have under it really help the ringing?
Do you have any thing I could listen to of you and your band playing? I tried listening to it on your site thing but I can’t seem to get it to work on my computer. Is there anything else I can download and listen to?
Me too. I already downloaded last Fr player could you guy’s and gal’s get a myspace.com or go on www.purevolume.com
