downhill riding on a road

I have been trying to learn how to ride down streets in my town. they are steep. I do not have a brake but I found if you shift the tire from side to side it helps somewhat. Anyone else do it this way?

Lean back, pull up on the seat and apply pressure to the pedals as they come up. Do not let your speed get out of control. Using this position you tend to stall and step off the back when you get uncomfortable.

Yes, your knees will hurt until you get used to it.
