Does anybody here go tanning?

Hi.
I’m a pale whitey, and I hate the sun. But I like to do things outdoors in the summer and I always wind up getting sunburned. I try to put sunscreen on but it is such a drag, and it doesn’t work because I sweat it off. Would going to a tanning booth help me? I’ve never been to one.

reminds me of the ad that says:

My brother accidentally killed himself.

He died of skin cancer.

He was careless aobut reapplying sunblock…

If you go to a tanning booth you’ll either have to start going in the sun regularly once you get a base tan started. Use SPF30 and go in the sun every day. I’m in the sun at least 4 hours a day, sometimes 10+.

Are you really so self-conscious that you’d resort to artificial tanning to make yourself “look better” to other people? Are you considering going to a tanning bed in hopes that it will prevent you from getting sunburned? It might -I’m not entirely sure- build up a sort of callous/‘base tan’ that would help prevent you from burning all the time. I don’t burn unless I’m out on the water for hours without using suntan lotion.

I think tanning beds are stupid. It’s cheating yourself out of the essential vitamin D that you get from exposure to the sun, it costs money, and it’s not especially good for your body to be exposed to 95% UVA/5% UVB for twenty minutes, twice a week. You can develop an eye condition similar to what welders sometimes get (arc eye) if you fail to wear the protective goggles all the time.

Just go out in the sun.
Put on some suntan lotion, grab a few drinks, and read a book/listen to music.

They make sweatproof/waterproof suntan lotion, too, by the way.

just get out in the sun and enjoy your self!
Go surfing, skim boarding, swimming, sailing, frisbeeing!!, even unicycling.
Its cheaper and fun.
Note: make sure the area you want tanned is not covered. there are places you can go to get an allover tan.

Get coppertone sport sunscreen, it won’t sweat off. (blue bottle, kinda long, with notches on one side)

Also, they make spray on sunscreen now, if you hate rubbing it on so much.

Tanning beds won’t help, you still need to wear sunscreen even with a base tan.

Tanning Booths are good for your skin cancer!

Also…have you ever seen Final Destination 3?

Tanning booths allow you – without burning – to develop a protective tan. It is a controlled environment. You can control the “dose” right down to the minute. And then when you go out into the real sun, you are not burned to a crisp. And just as importantly, you don’t have to rub cancer-causing “suntan lotion” into your skin.

It feels good. It makes you look good. It allows you to safely get more sunshine than you would otherwise. You could do the same thing with the real sun, but it’s harder to do without burning. And it’s harder to get an even tan. I pre-tan so that I can get huge amounts of real sun all summer long. I don’t like to waste any rays of sunshine. By pre-tanning, I can get lots of real sunshine as soon as it gets warm.

Some tanning bulbs have more UVB than others, which I think is the part of the spectrum that causes us to create vitamin D. If you maintain a tan all year long by going to a tanning salon, you will make it harder to produce vitamin D during the colder months. But your vitamin D production might be so low at that time of year that it makes little difference. (edit: using bulbs higher in UVB might cause a little vitamin D production, which might be more than you would get in the winter otherwise – this is something to research: which is healthier in the winter – being white so you can absorb as much naturally occurring UVB as possible, or getting artificially-produced UBV from tanning bulbs).

I hate to think about what all the electromagnetic emissions are doing to the body. But I think tanning salons are relatively safe. When you talk about the safety of tanning salons, you can’t compare them to nothing. If you frequently end up burning in the real sun, then tanning salons are the safest thing you could do. Also, consider the safety of always staying inside and covering up and using sunscreen when you do go outside. You will end up vitamin D deficient (and deny yourself all the other healthy benefits of sunshine). Again, tanning salons are safer than staying inside all the time. So, to those who say tanning beds are unsafe, I say “compared to what?”

WORST thing you can do to your skin! Don’t do it. If you’re young you won’t see the damage until your older, and it will cause premature aging of the skin. You should also use a broad-spectrum sunscreen EVERY day rain or shine. You’ll thank me when you’re 50, but still look 25!

i wouldnt do it… dont want skin cancer

Have you ever heard that Sunscreen Speech song? But only the first few lines would apply here (haha, get it, apply?)
