Just quickly- To confirm. I will be getting a Shimano M596 Disc brake with an Ice 160mm rotor. The adapter I need to use this with the KH frame with disc tab would be this one?
Cheers gang,
Mark

For the first disc brake would you guys suggest a hydraulic one or this Spyro? In general, are there great differences in maintenance between mechanical and hydraulic ones once set up?
Thanks for replies
The TRP Spyre is the only mechanical brake I have found that works for a uni.
They are both easy and they both work, I think it matters more as to which is more readilly available, so hydros would probably be the easiest and the Shimano M596 is a good bet.
I was really meaning ‘out of alignment due to UPDs’ but whatever.
On the plus side, they really look cool.
I don’t think the floating rotor helps with set up tolerance, I think it’s designed more for vibration and/or heat reduction.
That’s the theory - I have them because they’re lighter (at the time the lightest available - not up to date with the latest minimalist rotors) and they look bling. I have to admit I’m not all that convinced about claims for vibration reduction and less issues with heat.
Pics from my 36er Oracle steel frame tab mount, 165/137 Moments, 4mm crank spacer. Weight shown is before I cut the housing and cable, so subtract 30-40gm.
I don’t have a mechanical on my Oracle/Spirit muni, but the Spyre will fit fine as the caliper dimensions are slightly less than the M596 which I currently use on that muni.
The only thing I might change is to use a lever that has some preset loading to better adjust the lever angle. The short lever TRP does not have that adjustment. I bought those levers because I needed a complete brake ASAP.
I have always been a mechanical disc brake fan, ran Avid BB7 on my bikes and when I build a tandem I will run mechanicals. I like the simplicity, field repairability, and the low cost to buy and replace mechanicals.
I would recommend to fix the cable as close as possible to the caliper to increase the progressivity, as fitted it’s on the opposite side of the tightening bolt
great job Ben !
What pads does it take?
@ Boin boin, good call on the cable routing, I did it on the side of the road and gave it no further thought.
Okay, so I swapped brakes from the oregon to the Oracle, so the spyre is now mounted with spirits and a d’ brake on the Oracle, 4mm crank spacer, and there is ~2mm clearance between crank and caliper.
For reference, a 4mm spacer is smaller than what comes oem; 6-8mm is the norm.
You’re welcome
Now off for a ride!
MountainUni Disk Brake System
So I am interested in getting some disk brakes for my Nimbus Mountain Unicycle. I don’t really want to spend too much, so I tried to find the cheapest way to do it. Here it is, would it work, and does anybody have any suggestions for better/cheaper parts?

I’m pretty sure you can get a rotor for less than that if you keep looking.
But that is the only one that is compatible with the sinz cranks.
Aahhh that makes more sense.
Is your uni ISIS? If it is those cranks will not work on it.
also go with spirits WAY better
Yes it is Isis. I meant to link different cranks.
I just bought:

I already have a disc brake which I took off my mountain bike - getting a bit old which is why it was replaced, but I actually have 3 complete brakes to pick and choose parts from so should be able to get something functional. It does have the advantage of weighing less than the difference between my current frame and the d’brake I linked above so I should actually end up with a lighter uni than I started with.
I forgot to put the adapter. What adapter would work with this setup?
