deep uni question

I confess I don’t know, I lent it to someone and I cannot remember who…
it has not returned. Yes I know. I think this one is lost. At least if it
ever turns up everyone will know that it is mine.

Jeff,

I made mine out of stainless steel and had it TIG welded by a rock-ape at the local welding shop. I made up the dimensions by simply measuring the size of the wheel and tyre and making a gap big enough to suit. I was a little bit concerned about the strength of the bashed-in bits, especially considering how thin the material is which is why I chose to make it a little wider. At the moment, at its widest point, its only 5" wide anyway, so Im not that concerned. I may modify my jig in the future and try one with the bashed in bits, but that comes with its own set of problems which I wasnt willing to address when I made the first one.

I just got the frame back from the welders just now after having the bearing caps welded on. You are dead right, it now feels SOLID. I cant see it going anywhere now! Perhaps I will try to narrow it down a bit and see how it goes.

Im really glad to hear that you have no trouble with yours, seeing as Ive put so much effort into building my own. I will be either chrome plating mine or plasma spraying it, so I shouldnt have any paint issues.

The wheel Im having built is a standard Suzue 36 hole hub with 14 gauge spokes laced to a Dice Two Four 24" rim with brass spiline-drive nipples. Im not too concerned about the weight, just strength, as you can see!
