deep uni question

All,

I ride the (United?) Standard Adult Trainer with a Miyata seat, from unicycle.com. This is the uni I am learning to ride on now.

I also have a 1985 era Schwinn in mint condition, with the sales receipt and the cheesy little manual. It was never ridden except a little by my mom. She got it for me as a high school graduation present, but I never rode it. She taught herself to ride it (I just found this out recently) in her driveway, and then put it away. We (me & mom) realized it was in the attic in mint condition, right about the time my United trainer was in the mail.

I may try to get a new tire or otherwise make the second Uni rideable. Well, it is rideable now, but I’d feel better with a new wheel even though the one on it looks fine.

Currently I ride:

Schwinn 24"- beater unicycle (the one I loan out)
Cycle Pro 20"- don’t really ride much but I learned on it
And of course my personal favorite:
Chris Reeder custom muni 24"- 4130 cromoly frame with room for 24" Gazz
or 26" wheel, only 1.49 lbs.!!! www.reeder.unicyclist.com/ears/

Currently I ride:

-Muni, pahley 26 inch with miyata saddle, tioga tyre and shin eater
pedels.
-20 inch chapy frame with viscount saddle, Primo the wall tyre and litle
4.5 inch cranks, this is my hockey uni.

not being riden much due to crap weather at the mo, but sitting in the
shed

-Coker, 36 inch, black leather saddle cover on miyata base with green
handles, spikey pedals, and drag brake set up. My summer commuting
machine.
-24 inch, last used with handbars inplace of saddle at a workshop
-mini giraffe, last used at same workshop
-half an onza/monty cross. ( the other half is Pauls) also last used at
workshop.

It was very handy being able to take 6 unis to a workshop the other
week, one was the mini giraffe, for those who could already ride whilethe
24 inch with handle bars was tried by a few kids, and declared hard. the
others were all used by learners and improvers.

We will be going back to that youth circus club later in the year and hope
to work with them on some uni bits for their contribution to a local
fete.

Haha, let me clarify. The frame only weighs 1.49 lbs. (no, I don’t
inflate my tire with helium!) The entire muni is more like 13 lbs.

Jeff

10" ultimate wheel (still not fully sussed)
24" Ultimate wheel (got a puncture at the moment and has not been ridden
since October)
26" Ultimate wheel
16" DM ringmaster (on loan to a local club at the moment)
16" dodger (again also on loan, tend to use these for workshops)
20" Nimbus II with 48 spoke wheel (use this for learning stand up stuff)
20" CF MK5 unicycle blue tyre and seat (7lbs total).
20" Monty with susue hub and viscount seat
24" CF Mk3 set up for racing (have not ridden since last UNICON)
24" Max traction in my CF Mk2 frame (my favourite, 12lbs)
26" CF Mk5 unicycle, Mavic D321 rim etc, (great X-country unicycle, 11lbs)
28" CF Mk5 unicycle, Mavic 700c rim, set up for road riding (not ridden
since September)
36" Coker
5.5’ CF Giraffe
Mini giraffe (the original!)
Sem 2 wheel unicycle using 2 blue Nimbus wheels.

I have several others in bits as well.
These mostly live in my living room, under the stairs. I suppose the
equivalent to John’s garage.

I have been known to turn up to conventions with most of these with me and
ride most of them at least once during the day… sad really!

I also have several hundred unicycles in a warehouse… but I am not sure if
I should add these to the list or it would be a little bit big and I would
have thought that the only person on the newsgroup with more then would be
John Drummond!

Lewis-

Does your mom still ride?

Hey, arn’t you married, Harper? I meen, ya: she’s hot and all… still… shiesh!

Christopher

New 20" Bogglefingers with a slightly bent (due to failed jumpmounts, ouch)
air-converted bogglefingers seat and a very shiny Nimbus II frame.
Old 20" Bogglefingers, slightly rusty wheel/bearings but with new seat and
frame (from above). Recently on-loan to a friend who gave up trying :frowning:
Still thinking of putting 18 incadenscent bulbs into the rim and using it
for nightriding and parades… It’s either that or put 1+1 together and make
a two-wheeled giraffe (waaaaay beyond me.).
28" Nimbus with large street tyre. Smooth, fast, great for medium distances
but not in this weather.

Thinking of getting a DM 6’ giraffe but having difficulty justifying it.
I’ve decided I must officially pass Level 4 before I properly consider it.

1963 Used, homemade 20", traded in 1964
1964 New Oxford 24", sold 1998

1998 Zephyr 24"
2001 Coker 36"
2001 Torker 20"
2001 Jugglebug 20"
2002 Semcycle 6’ giraffe, 20" wheel (why the heck hasn’t it been delivered yet?)

Future:

2002 one-of-a-kind 24"/36" wheel equivalent with epicyclic geared hub…oooo, yeah BABY

No, I don’t think so.

Right after I ordered from unicycle.com she called and said “Hey I thought I had given it away years ago, but that must have been a bike, because your old Schwinn is still here.” So, she threw it in the truck and brought it over.

Then I reinflated the tire. Then she grabbed onto it and started to act like she was going to mount it. I said “What are you doing?” She stopped and said “well when you didnt do anything with this, I learned to get around on it some and ride it around the driveway.”

This surprised me, but I wouldn’t let her get on it. It made me nervous, and she didnt have a helmet and hadnt done it in … what, 17 years? And I had never seen her do it. Plus she had just had surgery a month or two prior, so I just was picturing my mom’s innards ripping, or her falling and hurting herself (she is only 53 though).

So, it never got past that. So, I dont really know.

She did just buy a really nice street bike (a Trek) with a shock absorber in the seat … feels like riding in a chair, it is very nice.

If she expresses interest again, I will help her get on and make her wear some gear, just in case, since I’ve never seen her ride (I was off at school at the time).

Are you still riding the “ears” muni? is it still going good? any problems with the frame in particular?

Im building a few of these frames using the same shape (without the bashed-in bits) but with my own measurements. I am a bit concerned with the amount of movement the tubes have even after welding. It also seems to flex a lot.

The frame is all welded up now, but Im still waiting for the indestructable wheel from hell to arrive… its at the bike shop being built at the moment. As soon as it arrives, I’ll go out and put yet another “ears” through its paces and report back.

I occasionally ride a 24" Norco from the early 80’s but I mainly ride my 24" Bedfprd, purchased last year. I use a no name 2.125 tire for street stuff and a 2.6 Stout for Muni.

Hey Gilby and John Foss- - you two wouldn’t happen to have an extra pair of unicycles laying around for my friend Jonathan W. would you? all we’ve got are some 20" inchers. Me a five year old Savage and him a brand new Torker. I would be willing to pay for these!! (or if you just wanted to give one to me that would be fine too)

At the moment, I don’t have any I want to get rid of… but if I did, I’d be tempted to just keep it as there are always people nearby me that would like to borrow them.

Sorry.

Hey Roger, what happened to your one off Pashley suspension forked 20inch
muni. The one you won at Red Bull mayhem the other year?

Yes, I rode it almost every day this summer. The only problem with the
frame is the powder coating has started to lose its shine. But as far
as design flaws or anything, there are none.

I have experienced no flex while riding under very high torque
situations. It is stiff; in fact, it makes my Schwinn frame feel like
spaghetti. Even with the frame off the wheel (or the wheel off the frame)
I have tried to flex it in various directions but without success. What
measurements are you using?

Are you using a Profile wheel? If not, what?

Leo,
Why have you chosen not to use the bashed-in-bits? That is the best part
of the design; otherwise, its just the same as a Nimbus II or a DM. The
“ears” design allows for a narrower profile (meaning you hits your legs
on the frame less) and still allow clearance for a huge tire (so mud and
snow don’t get caked between tire and frame).
