Could you ride these trails, either up or down? How hard
would it be for you?
These are pictures from a local trail that I’ve had a lot of
difficulty riding on my Hunter. There are other pics in that
directory, but the above pics show the elevation changes
the best.
I wonder how much practice it’s going to require for me to
ride these trails without dismounting all the time.
It’s said to be the hardest trail for MTB in the area (Austin, TX).
Going up looks like it would be tough. I’m not very good at climbing loose dirt or rolly rocks like what is on that trail. I loose traction on loose stuff. I’d probably be walking some (most) of the uphills. It’s hard to tell how steep it is since pictures tend to make inclines look flatter than they are in real life.
But going down would be a blast. Especially the little rock ledge drops. I’d be willing to suffer through the tough uphill parts to be able to ride the downhill bits. The downhill parts look very doable. There might be some wheel traps at the bottom of some of the little drops, but it looks like it all could be ridable.
I think I could ride down the first two. I have a United/Monty, but I can do some mountain stuff on it. I think I wouldn’t be able to clear the first few tries.
These trails seem pretty hard. What you will need to practice:
riding off small ledges
riding on very bumpy/rocky terrain
riding over rocks when your cranks are in the neutral position
I don’t think I could climb these trails but I believe that it would be fun
to ride down. Having very little experience with muni I cannot say for sure
how succesful I’d be but I’m sure it would be a blast.
i know i could ride them better than this guy!were you riding with him or do you just have this piece of blackmail? unbelivable! see what 2 wheels and a SUV get you?
OK, I should have just said 3" tire. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a Gazz.
I want to ride those trails. Someone needs to schedule an Austin muni weekend. Just don’t schedule it in the middle of summer when it’s unbearably hot. Those trails look fun.
I would definitely struggle to do much up, but most of
the down looks fantastic. There would certainly be
some serious dismounts, though. Not something I’d
ride down with confidence, but rather pick my way through
with care. I would quite likely bounce out of my seat after
that drop where you are lying down.
The trouble with 2-dimensional views up or down hills is… ya just can’t get any real idea of steepness. Sometimes you can’t even tell there’s an incline. How about a trail profile?

Or stereo photos with something hanging or otherwise vertical included
for reference.
If you’ve just lent your stereo camera out :-), you can make a stereo
pair by moving your camera laterally 6.5 cm between consecutive shots.
Just make sure nothing in the field of view moves (including things as
leave movement due to wind). You don’t have to point exactly in the
same direction, only roughly so.
Some ppl can view stereo from a pair with the unaided eye, otherwise
use some viewer.
Stereo photos are fun! One fun thing is to dwarf a (mountain)
landscape into a maquette by increasing the stereo base (distance) to
meters, or even 10’s of meters. Sorry, metres.
It looks like www.hammerheadbikes.com is down for repairs. It was working yesterday. Maybe we slashdotted them by having every unicyclist in the world go to their gallery.
The pics are back up now; I guess the site was down temporarily.
I didn’t take the pics, and I didn’t actually make it to the sections
shown in the pics, but they’re representative of what I rode.
The hills weren’t too steep, but they were peppered with ledges
which killed my momentum, and loose rock which I had to dodge.
I would ride about 10-20 yards, dismount, walk another 30 yards,
and then repeat. That got very tiring after about 1/2 mile in the 90
degree heat.

OK I saw the pics now.
Up: no way. I’m getting better but this is far from me yet.
Down: depends. I cannot judge the steepness very well. If grip is much
of an issue I probably can’t.
For quite a while I used to think of my MUni trips as off-road mounting practice interrupted by short periods of actual riding. Nuttin’ wrong with that!
