If you’ve never seen Penn & Teller’s outrageous show on Showtime, it’s pretty funny. They debunk many of the world’s common myths and shams. But they do it kind of Michael Moore style, only funnier and ruder. Hey, with a title like that, what do you expect? Some of my favorite topics I’ve seen covered were this one, on bottled water, and PETA, recycling, the Bible, and Feng Shui.
In the Bottled Water segment, diners at a Manhattan restaurant were offered to try out their “new” water menu. They could chose from any of a dozen or so healthy alternatives to other kinds of drink. They ranged from inexpensive domestic-looking brands, to pricey French-sounding ones.
What they were actually drinking was New York City water, poured into all the different bottles from a garden hose out back, with Teller gleefully operating the hose. People had all sorts of opinions of which waters they liked better than the others.
So anyway, yes, many brands of bottled water are made from “municipal” water. This is often filtered to clear out some of the impurities that give some city water its distinctive taste.
Funny to think that bottling water is more expensive for the Coca-Cola company than their sodas, which presumably contain many more ingredients. But again, the main ingredient in Coke or any other soda is still water.
I have found this to be true with several foods. Many people I know have made the transition to diet sodas. They hated it at first, but now they’re used to is and the regular version tastes way too sweet for them.
Tell me. Is this true for most of you adults? When you were a little kid, you could eat sweet stuff all day. A can of cake frosting was the equivalent of an orgy for an 8-year-old. But if I tried to eat that today, I’m sure I’d be sick before I got halfway through. I think your tastes definitely change as you age. They not only get more sophistocated, I think they also mute down.
I think the idea is to cut way down on it. It’s almost impossible to eliminate. But most of us Americans would be a lot healthier if we ate less of it.
Do as he says, not as he does. Sounds like you have found a great eating system for yourself. Can you tell us more? Though what I need the most is discipline, it’s always good to hear success stories from people you can relate with.
What do you mean by PETA? Are those doctors a bunch of ill-informed, crazed idiots?
Yeah but IBC has the best creme soda that’s avalible. I know Jones makes Creme soda flavor but it’s never at the Starbuck’s that I visit. Root beer is the best Jones flavor. As for the bad flavors mmmmm bubble gum sounds good. Not something I’d drink everyday but sounds good. What i think is a bad flavor is black cherry.
My biggest problem with the low-carb diet is the low-carb foods they try to pass off as healthy. I don’t care if it’s low-carb beer; it’s still bad for you. A low-carb hamburger? It’s still full of grease and salt. A balanced diet (in whatever manifestation that ends up being) with a good amount of exercise and less junk food will be much more healthy than any sort of fad diet.
Nope… I am self employed and work for myself. No secret there. I am the bugman! I have two companies that deal with pest control etc… one selling to companies, homeowners etc… The other actually providing service. So not even remotely related to Coke.
I’m not on a low carb diet. I’m not on any kind of an organized diet. I eat what I want. I just try to eat sensibly. If anything, I eat a high carb diet with lots of bread, sandwiches, and sugar foods.
I am trying to cut back on the calories and lose a little bit of weight. I’ve slimmed down by about 15 pounds over the past year.
My interest in Coke C2 is just another way to cut some extra calories out of my diet without having to go to a traditional diet soda or diet drink. I get a lot of calories from the stuff that I drink. I like sweetened drinks like juice, soda, and Kool-Aid. There’s a lot of room to cut back there. I’ve been drinking more drinks like Gatorade and Powerade instead of soda and Kool-Aid. The Gatorade type drinks have half the sugar of regular soda and I like the taste. I also drink water, but I prefer something flavored and sweetened.
Nothing beats good old fashioned diet and exercise. I know a guy who is currently a recluse making a living off ebay. He used to work in Hollywood as a grip/body technician type guy. He told me to really just cut carbs, but not so much that it’s not healthy. if you diet for 6 days and don’t for 1 you still win.
Of course he also reccommended a can of tuna with a dollop of mayo for dinner, but he once spit in Sylvester Stalone’s eye so I figure he’s alright.
To continue this sidekick, some brand of yoghurt in the Netherlands about 10 years ago changed their round beakers for half-round ones, meaning they were still round but with two flat sides. The diameter of the round portion stayed the same, but without the two portions that were ‘cut off’ the content was obviously less. They had ‘500 ml’ on the old package, and ‘500 g’ on the new ones; both were correct as the density of yoghurt is somewhere around 1.1 g/ml. They touted that the new packages fitted in a tighter shop or transportation space, while fooling almost anyone into thinking that the content was the same amount! That is, including a jury who awarded them a design prize for it.
Most summers at my local grocery store they sell 20oz bottles of coke for $0.99, and 2 liter bottles for $.079! ie: you pay less for buying 4x as much soda. Even so, they still sell far more 20oz bottles than 2 liter ones. For drinks, small size is a convenience people will pay for.
