cmos battery?

my p.c keeps saying my cmos battery(or something like that) is low, how do you charge it?If there is any way to do this at all. Also is it going flat because i turn my p.c off at the mains every night?

The cmos battery in the computer is a little battery, about the size and shape of a quarter most times, that resides on the mother board of your computer. The main purpose of the batter is to keep the system clock running and to maintain current for your cmos setting. If your batter is dead or running low, the system clock will read the wrong time and you cmos settings will be lost (neither are such a big deal)

They are easy to replace once you know what to look for. As I said before, the battery is usually the size of a quarter but sometimes it will look like a photo battery. To replace it, first open the case to your computer and look on the motherboard (the giant circuit board that every thing attaches to) to see the model of the battery. Once you know what battery to get, go to any store that sells watch/button batteries and pick up one. Radioshack will have it. Replace the battery, close the case, and you are all set.

note 1: Be sure you unplug the computer when you open it up.

note 2: Be sure to touch a bare metal part of the computer’s case before you touch any part of the computer’s innards. This will release any static charge in you. Failure to discharge yourself can result in you frying your computer.

note 3: After replacing the battery, you will need to reset the time on your computer as well as any custom settings in the Cmos. Neither are very difficult.

hope this helps,
Daniel

Re: cmos battery?

It shouldn’t matter too much that you turn your computer off at the mains every night. It’s normal for the battery to go flat after a few years. Some batteries last longer then others. How old is your computer?

Daniel

the old cmos battery lasted years but the current one only lasted about a year thanks for the help.
