Club vs Nimbus

I’m looking at getting a nice 20" starter unicycle. My last one was second-hand and broke very quickly. I’ve heard that the Nimbus is nicer and will last longer, but I’m curious how big the difference is and if the extra $130 is justified for a newer rider.

I’m also considering 24". The most distance I’ll probably ride is a mile at a time, and where I live, it’s completely flat. How much of a difference between the two wheel sizes will there be on a trip that short? (I’m a fit person)

If the Nimbus is with Isis cranks you will basically not be able to brake the hub but i believe club is with square taper which can be broken with enough abuse.

It wouldnt really matter if you go with 24" or 20" as you can compensate with different length cranks.

With these wheel sizes speed is 90% technique rather than fitness.

I just broke my square taper uni hub after 3 years and 11 months of decently hard riding so its not too bad

Club is fine for general riding but is weaker due to the “square” cranks. Nimbus has ISIS cranks and will be able to take more abuse like hopping and doing various tricks. So it really depends what your goal is. Now I am assuming you are fairly average weight because if you are a heavy person you might want the Nimbus for general riding.
I would buy a 24". I 20" is in my opinion mostly for learning or doing tricks. Riding any sort of distance on a 20" is slow. A 24" is also more stable and will give you a more relaxed ride when you get the hang of it.

You are right but as a beginner I believe the 24" is faster and more stable.
Obviously with practice and very short cranks you can go almost as fast on a 20" which you have proven yourself

Yeah, you are more right. I started out learning on a second hand 20" that broke almost immediately which i then replaced with a 24".

The short cranks skills do of course transfer to a 24" so i was actually doing good speeds on it before the hub broke.

It depends on your inseam for the 20" or the 24", but Nimbus is definitely worth the extra $130. I was also debating the Nimbus 20" or the Club 20" after wanting to upgrade from my 16" Hoppley wihch you definitely should not get, super low quality and I went with the Nimbus. I am very happy with my choice.

I learned on a 26" Club, and almost 3 years later I’m still riding it :cowboy_hat_face: It’s still holding up strong after a good couple seasons of riding, and I think it’ll happily continue to carry me for many more miles to come. I’ll add that I’m not doing anything like riding off of curbs or hopping, and I’m almost exclusively riding on pavement.

I assume if the 20" and 24" models are built similarly, they’ll hold up just as well. For a newer rider a Club certainly wouldn’t be a bad choice, you can always upgrade later.
