I’m going to buy my first uni soon, and I have a question. If I buy, say a 24
inch, would it be possible to change it to a 20 inch at a later date by just
changing the wheel? Or would this just stuff everything up? I’m not quite sure
which size I want, though I’m leaning towards a 24 inch. I figured if it’s
possible to change the wheel if and when I want to then a 24 inch would be the
way to go. Or am I just kidding myself?

Of course it’s possible to change the wheel, but hardly worth the trouble, as
the crank assembly is attached. It’s not like changing the wheel on a bike.
They say it’s easier to learn on a 20", although I think it depends on your size
and preferences. If you’re into doing tricks, etc. the 20" is better. If you’re
looking at doing some distance, then go with the bigger wheel.
In any case, keep us posted on your progress. Good luck!

It seems like a lot of hassle to change wheels. Why not buy both a 20" and a
24". That way you have a spare Uni to teach your friends on.
About wheel size, I spent 6 years riding everywhere on a 20". I then bought
myself a 24". For general riding I much prefer the 24" - probably a matter of
personal preference though.

It has been done before. There are two options
The easiest would be if you happen to own another wheel complete with hub and
axle unit. Harold Jarvie should have details on how to get hold of an axle unit
and then a bike shop will be able to spoke a wheel rim in for you. It is fairly
easy to swap cranks and pedals over to a wheel so you wouldn’t need to worry
about having two sets them. This would give you the ability to swap between a
20" and 24" wheel whenever you wanted without too much trouble.
Alternatively, if you only have one axle you can get the 24" rim removed and
have the axle respoked to a 20" This would be not as flexible , unless you
learnt how to do it yourself you wouldn’t want to do it more than once! It means
you don’t have to buy another axle but it is also a fairly permanent change.
