Buying a Giraffe

> 1. What brand should I get? - I’m looking to spend around $400, give or take.

These are my four favorites on the market, in no order:

  1. Semcycle giraffe - High quality chrome A-frame, Very similar to the old
Schwinns you can no longer get. Designed by a professional, for professional
use (strong). Also with the different number of teeth on top & bottom
sprockets, the tire won’t wear out in one spot like it does on the average
giraffe. Second lightest of the four.

  2. DM adjustable - I’ve seen an older one of these, and it was beautifully made
out of round chrome tubing with very nice welds. Factor in the cost of
shipping if you are in the U.S. as it comes from England. He also makes them
non-adjustable, but it’s cool to be able to have two giraffes in one! Heavy.

  3. The Unicycle Factory - Tommy Miller can make you anything you want.
Professionals all over the world are riding his giraffes, which can be made
with a take-apart top (to fit in the car). These are extremely strong and
subsequently heavy, but this doesn’t matter for performers or heavy users.

  4. Miyata Skycycle - This is a smaller, lighter giraffe, a little under 5’ with
average sized rider. It’s painted instead of chrome, and best suited for
light duty riding by an adult, or any type of riding by a lighter child. High
quality parts, but not as sturdy as the others.

For a collarbone-breakin’ football player like yourself, I’d recommend the top
three only. For more information than you can ever use, give Tommy Miller a call
and ask him. He knows about all of them and an help you decide.

The best place to get a giraffe sized just for you and completely checked out is
from The Unicycle Factory in Kokomo, Indiana. Tom Miller knows more about
unicycles than anyone else on the planet. His number is 765-452-2692. I
especially like that he reassembles every unicycle he gets from a manufacturer
before he sends it out. Tina

Re: Buying a Giraffe

I want to second Tina’s advice. Tom Miller is a legend in the unicycling
community, and we trade with him as often as we can. He’s the only custom
unicycle builder in the U.S. that we know of.

Though Tom chides us a bit for owning only a computer and a vice (we actually
have our own shop now, but shhh…don’t tell Tom!), we refer business to him at
every opportunity, including custom work and obscure parts that no one (and I
mean no one) else on the planet would have. He really is a great guy, and a true
unicycle craftsman.
