Broke the World Record for Jump Roping on a Unicycle

Yesterday at the Mondo Jugglefest, six unicyclists attempted to break the world record, including myself.

We did it!

I was the first to go and I got 175 jumps in a minute, breaking the previous world record of 169 held by both Peter Rosendahl and Constance Cotter. I held the record for all of about 4 minutes until that record was smashed.

Andy Cotter will probably post later the official numbers of everyone and who currently holds the record.

Congrats! Hey, any advice on gripping the seat better? I am always getting to about 5 hops, and then the seat just slips.
-David Kaplan

Good work, Gilby. I still wonder where you find the time to do all of this stuff. Congratulations to you for your 4/15 Andy Warhhol. You’ve got 11 more minutes coming from somewhere.

I can’t even imagin hopping 175 times a mintue! I guess we may see Gilby Branded Inner Theigh Armor, soon. Any trouble walking, after that?

While we’re on the subject of bizzar skills- can you hoola-hoop on the uni?

Christopher

Practice. You want to stand up on the pedals and grip the seat with your thighs. It might help to try to keep your knees pointed together.

No problem walking, it really doesn’t hurt the thighs that much. It does give the arms a good workout though.

I’ve tried it with little success.

RE: Broke the World Record for Jump Roping on a Unicycle

Here is the final info on world record on Jump Roping.

As Gilby already mentioned, he broke the record at 175 jumps per
minute and held it for about five minutes.

The current world record for this event is:
Men
Ryan Woessner - 206
Brady Witbeck - 206
Women
Amy Shields - 209

You can read more about these riders at:
http://www.mondo-fest.org/worldrecord.html

So, you are wondering where I came in? During the official attempt,
my best try was 205. So close, but not quite. A two way tie for the
world record is cool but a three way tie would have been even better.

Wow- just amazing! Congradulations, and thanx for the inspiration!

Not to steel your fire: but why are there male/female catagories? Seems pointless… the way I see it, if you had hit 206, you would have tied for 2nd place, as Amy’s 209 makes her the Wierd Uni Skill Champion- regardless of sex.

Wow that’s awesome- congratulations! I’ve never seen this done. Does the skipping rope pass
under the wheel more than once per hop?

‘Weird Uni Skill’? Arn’t all unicycle records (in some way or
another) Wierd Uni Skills?

Anyway, the record before was non-gender based. We decided to split
the record out by male and female (as many records are). One of the
more obvious reasons we did it was so more people can hold the
record. Typically in the world of records, men usually have the
faster time or higher number but in this case it is the women who has
the higher number. That is kind of cool. While the record made a big
jump upwards, it is still attainable to be beaten by someone putting
in some serious training (for both male or female).

Just in case the question meant “Can it be done?”, I’ve seen someone
do it, and I think it was Teresa Abrahams.

The rope only passes under the wheel one per hop. We have learned to
hop just high enough so the rope can just fit under. We have played
around with doing a double (rope going around twice per hop) but it
seems to be quite hard. I have done it several times but only after
lots of attempts. Maybe if somebody put their mind to it they could
get it with some consistency.

Wow!

If only one pass of the rope is allowed per hop, Amy’s score of 209 per minute means she maintained 3.48333… hops per second!

Good grief!

Your hops must be very precise and fast. Is there a conscious flex/spring for each hop, or do you get any mileage out of bounce, in the way a drummer might get several hits for one down stroke because of the bounce of the stick off the drum head?

I have to say, either way, I’m astounded!

Congratulations to all!

Lewis

I’m having a hard time envisioning that many hops per second. Is there video somewhere?

Has this record been broken since?

Is there a record for the most number of hops regardless of time?

Wow, this thread is friggin old. This record is long gone. The current record is like 260 skips or something. Daike Izumeda (Hope I spelled his name right) did it.

Really?? Look at your clock and tap 1 beat per second then count out triplets or 16ths.

| ------- | ------ |
Trip-o-lit-Trip-o-lit

| ------ | ------ |
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a

Now you know the tempo. Isnt ridiculously fast.

From what I remember of drumming, if a bar is one second, this is the bar cut into 3 or 16 [/threadjacking /pedantry]

| ------- |
1—2---3

| ------ | ------ | ------ | ------ |

1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a

3 beats a second is fast rock music, 4 beats a second is fast thrash metal, over that is… speed metal? So if you want to improve that is probably the music to listen to while you practice

That can really be right or wrong. I play some pretty fast stuff but never would I call it speed metal. =p

Jumping to the tempo of a fast song would be a good idea though. Or just set a temp track and jump either notes to whatever it is. Would be easy to calculate the bounces per minute and all.

Daiki Izumida, And it was 214 times in a minute.

EDIT: well… it is…
