Brand new broken Schlumpf

Ah, great point! I also used blue locktight on the crank bolts when assembling my KH24. Louise’s right one came loose during the Africa tour, but mine has never came loose.

It looks like Kris’s website has been updated with photos of the new 2009 updates to the KH/Schlumpf:

Notice the new ‘power hump’ on the left of the black casing to accommodate the larger internal bearings.

Florian is awesome, and mine should be in the post any day.

I don’t think that is new. Looking back at some photos of the first KH-Schlumpf hubs they look the same.

I won’t disagree about Florian being awesome though

I got my updated hub (and owner: Nathan Hoover)! I can’t wait to build it back into my KH36 and start riding it around again.

Florian is top notch. I absolutely love my hub(s).

I had a nice small brown box waiting on my doorstep today as well! #229 (owner: Rob Youngren). This is round TWO at it. I killed #127 after only 20 flat paved miles! :astonished: I’m going to put this into my KH24… for a serious trail killing machine! Oh and +1,000,000 cool points for Florian. What a guy!

You will love having it in the KH24!!! That is by far my favorite unicycle at this point. My opinion may change once I get my KH26 built up, but we’ll see…

(ps: Yes, that means I will have a geared 24, 26 and 36).

corbin: you must be rich! And at only 31! Damn where did I go wrong!

I am now using 4 Nm and it seems to be enough.

I am using 5nm and it works fine. Will try going a little less - my torque wrench only goes down to 5.

Planet axle pin?

I got a nice warning and a special screw to check the planet axle pins in my Schlumpf hub. Unicycle.com warns that the hub might lock up.

It seems from this notice that maybe a planet pin was out of tolerance and came out of its seat.

I think everyone with the new hub is receiving the test screw for the planet axle pin. Got mine a week ago, tested no problem.

Last I heard all hubs have tested ok, apart from the one hub initially which was the reason the test screws etc were sent out. Good example of customer service imo.

Still waiting for the screw to arrive, since 2 weeks.:frowning: …but so far my new hub works fine.

Still waiting for any signs of life from Florian since a couple of weeks. No answers to the last 3 e-mails I sent him. He didn’t even confirm to have received the broken hub. It’s very annoying.

i’m in the same boat as you Munirocks. I had to send my hub back to get repairs. From the shipping invoice i can tell it was delivered on the 6th of October but i have not received confirmation from florian that he has it- let alone been given any info about when i might get it back. I am getting a little anxious because i am worried i might not have it in time for my trip to Unicon :frowning:
Hopefully we will hear from him soon- i got mighty attached to my hub in the 2 weeks that i had it in working order and i miss it! riding just isn’t the same without it.

Mark

Got my screw and all tested just fine! I really put the hub through some “trials” during the Asheville MUni Fest (rained during most of the rides). Thing took a licking and kept on ticking!

Just be advised that if you had an older hub and are going to get a NEW one like I did after I sent my broken one back, that the old shift knobs DO NOT FIT on the new hub. I kept the mushroom shaped shift knobs for spares and initially tried to use these on the new hub. Didn’t work. Apparently the new shift rod has a smaller diameter thread along with matching shift Knobs so the old shift knobs are just a souvenir now!

Okay, I finally got a sign of life from Florian. Not much more though.

I had sent him one more e-mail, in which I wrote something along the lines of “What is happening? Aren’t you going to answer my e-mails anymore? My patience is wearing thin.”

He replied with “Mine too. You’ll get an answer soon.”

That was all. Duh…

All I want is to know the status…

…and get the replacement hub. Soonish.

I think Florian is a great man, he cares about his customers and makes really innovative products. He did a very good job when my hub was broken, he’s always friendly and reasonable. But I think he could attend some communication training. Of course, we do not want him to spend all his time in front of his PC answering emails, but he could reserve some time for that. On the other hand we also need to understand that the problems with the MUNI hubs cost him much time.

Many companies had to or still have to learn that good and fast communication is a key element of customer satisfaction - which then helps to make more profit. You can make the best product in the world and still fail to sell it, just because communication sucks.

as you guys know, i live close to florian (10km), so i’m there sometimes and i like him as a good person… the factory is a small kind of garage workshop, not a big company, and armin, i think you’ve been there too, they work hard, and sure sometimes he’s slow on the computer, but that’s the way it goes, otherwise we have to order our hubs in taiwan or where-ever… :astonished:
threads like that made florian quit reading this forum :frowning:

Of course Florian is a wonderful guy. And his hub is such a significant addition to our little sport. I couldn’t stress the amount I appreciate this enough. And the fact that he goes to the trouble of producing these complicated devices for such a limited market. That’s incredible.

But: I expect to get some sort of feedback to important questions like:

  • Did you receive the hub yet?
  • How long is the expected waiting time approximately?
  • Could you ship the replacement to the following address?
  • etc

If there’s not the slightest answer for several weeks, that leaves the customer totally clueless. Not a very comfortable position, when you just spent half a fortune on this fantastic hub and had to send it back to Switzerland after having used it only once or twice before it broke…

Having to wait for the replacement is one thing. I could accept that. But then the least thing to be expected is some sort of a status report upon request.

Of course this whole bearing problem is a disaster for Florian as well.
He must feel terrible about it. And I believe he is working hard on improving the hubs in every possible way to get them closer to perfection.

But still I think he should take his correspondence a lot more seriously. That’s absolutely vital for his businesses reputation.

For sure yeah, the buttons aren’t compatible. Florian mentioned the diameter of the shifter shaft ends was reduced from 5mm to 4mm in order to get more material for the button i.e. make the buttons more robust.

No doubt it’s a bummer there have been some glitches with hubs along the way but in my view Florian has been more than generous in how he has handled that. Be patient. Once you start to get uptight about unicycling stuff, it’s probably time for a reality check.
