BMX track unicycle ideas

This is a theoretical question I would like to pose for you all:

What unicycle would you use for a Dirt BMX racetrack?
Your objective is to get you (and hopefully your unicycle) across the finish in one piece as fast as possible.

What is your dream unicycle for this task, and what components, wheel size, and crank size would you use?

I’m interested to hear people’s thoughts on this so good post.

I have bmx track local to me which I’ve never ridden. Main reason is that between jumps the track is unmade, this is not a problem for bmx as they just jump the gap which will not be possible on a uni as we just do not have the speed to so.

The BMX track near me is the typical dirt pump track, with no airborne sections. I would probably use a 29" with 125mm cranks. not sure if going 29+ would help or hurt more. Some kind of freewheel might be good if you can manage a beast like that.

BMX tracks are generally not a lot of fun on uni. There’s one near me that has four levels of track, from kids to major jumpers, and the third level can be minorly interesting. The setup I’ve had that worked the best is 29x2.6" with 114mm cranks; there’s one jump in particular where I can get enough air for it to feel fun.

I don’t think so. On such a track, it’s really hard to get the freewheel to go fast. You don’t have time to accelerate faster than on a fixed uni.
While it would not be faster, it may be funnier

Probably a 29" is your best bet, but maybe 36" could be faster if the track is smooth enough.

But normally my goal on tracks like this is just to get the tire of the ground, for that 29" is probably the most fun.

You may find this interesting to add to your post.

Unfortunately the wheel mill is closed but I road there for a few years on their top level that was flat with a few obstacles and burns, nothing like what these guys are doing.

That’s my favorite video of bmx track. Hope one day I can ride as well.

This is exactly the kind of riding I was imagining in my head!

No pedaling

…and no knee pads. He obviously knows what he‘s doing. I can only dream of such skills. Freewheel looks interesting, but I‘m too afraid of falling on my back. :slightly_frowning_face:

I love watching this but I can’t imagine maintaining any momentum without any downhill force. Amazing.

Same principle as riding anything else on a ‘pump track’. It’s kind of like riding a swing at a playground. By ‘jumping’ up when you are rolling uphill and pushing down when you are going down, you are adding the needed force to preserve your momentum.

29er 125mm cranks
