So I decided that unicycling is something I want to learn. Next step, what should I buy? I want to get a cheap, new cycle but all the different options and varieties have blown me away. I’m 6’ 1" tall and I weigh about 200 lbs, I also feel that I’m fairly well coordinated and have a better sense of balance than most folks my size. Any ideas about what I should get?
i would get a 20in sun than whan that brakes get a good one
For your height and weight, I’d go with a 24" Torker LX. Some people say 20" are a little easier to learn on, but I think you’d be happier with a 24. Have fun!!!
BTW-this kinda thing should go in RSU (other forum)
I think the general population here would recommend a Torker LX for the relatively low cost and reasonably good quality. Browse around and you will find lots of suggestions for learners. Personally, I recommend a 20" to learn on but there is a lot of disagreement on that. Have fun.
This would have been a good topic for Rec.Sport.Unicycling
A twenty inch tire is easiest to learn on. I think the Torker LX model is reasonably priced and will hold up to your weight. They also have a better seat that comes standard. If you want something that will get you down the road a little quicker, a 24 inch will be a little faster. I have had 2 torkers, and both are still being ridden after 2+ years.
true that a 20" is easier to learn on…but for your size, once you do learn, I think you’d be happier with a 24". and a 24" isn’t that much harder to learn to ride than a 20". my vote is for the 24" Torker LX.
Yeah torker LX definetly, very inexpensive unicycle, and it will hold up for the time being. I woul probably recommend the 24 inch wheel.
Thats exactlyc what I would say. (just whithout the typos)
A problem with being 6’1" is that most 20" unicycles will not fit you with the standard seatpost. You’d need a seatpost that is about 450mm to 500mm long to fit most 20" frames. No unicycle comes stock with a seatpost that long. The Torker LX comes with a 400mm seatpost so if you got a 20" Torker LX you’d have to also get a custom longer seatpost and custom work can get expensive. I had a long seatpost custom made by having an extension brazed on a standard length seatpost.
To address that problem there are now 20" frames that have longer necks so that you can use a shorter seatpost. 20" frames that have a long neck will fit an adult (especially a tall adult) much better than the standard 20" frames designed for kids and short people.
The 24" Torker LX would probably fit you. It also comes with a 400mm seatpost but since the wheel is bigger the seatpost doesn’t need to be as long compared to a 20".
If you do want to get a 20" I’d suggest getting a frame with a longer neck like the Semcycle Long Neck or the Koxx freestyle.
The Torker LX is a very good starter uni. Cheap enough that it won’t break the bank and the quality is better than any other uni for under $100 (or even under $150).
My friend who is 5’11’’ has a problem with all 20"es. Even if the seatpost fits, the cranks/wheel ratio is too small for his big legs, and he has no control. His feet fall off all the time for no reason.
For bigger-ish people I recommend a 24".
holy crap, I expected to wait a few days and maybe get one or two replies lol. Thanks for all the advice everyone. I think I’ll go with a 24" because I think that I’ve got the patients to learn on it even if it’s a little more difficult and I’m cheap so I don’t want to buy a new one in the near future. Thanks again everyone
