Re: bike trials comps

enter riding bikes? or riding a uni in BT comps?

As for riding a uni against bikes, the courses are very different, and you would prolly have a hard time completing the course, much less winning.

riding a uni in BT comps

I’ve ridden in about 5 bike trials comps on my uni, maybe more. They’re sooo much fun and our comps at least, everyone is really friendly and actually wants to see you clean a zone…it’s so different to most other sports. Really laid back. Although the last comp a couple of weeks ago involved riders from other states of Australia as well and they weren’t nearly as laid back as the Queenslanders (my state).

In our comps there are usually these categories: Intro A, Intro B, Sport, and Expert. I have always ridden sport and usually place towards the top of maybe 10 or so riders…so most of the lines are actually quite clean-able on a unicycle. Last comp I rode Elite (expert) and they also had a Pro category. There’s a video I made posted on RSU which shows one of the zones I cleaned. Natural trials is often better suited to unicycles, provided there aren’t any huge ups without a square surface to pedal grab onto (instead you have to learn to dab on a unicycle which I find quite difficult).

I don’t have a very impressive hop height at all and I get by fine, so that’s not something you really have to worry about. The thing is, on a unicycle you will usually either clean a zone or 5 it (the worst score you can get). So my scores are usually about half 0’s and half 5’s :).

The gaps are usually just as do-able on a unicycle as we can generally gap almost as far as the bike riders. I’ve posted 3 or 4 trials comp videos in the last year or two so if you’re wondering what it’s like (at least here in Australia which I think has more natural zones than many) you may want to check them out.

I say go for it! They’re so much fun and you’ll meet heaps of nice people. Because of going to trials comps I’m now part of a sponsored trials team (I’m getting more goodies - a free jersey - tomorrow at a speed trials competition I’m riding in) and most importantly I have a whole bunch of new mates to go riding with.

Tomorrow I will make a video of this speed trials comp I’m riding in. I don’t know how I’ll go…I’ve seen one before that I didn’t ride in and I think it would have been all ride-able.

i rode in the racoon rally trials comp and came in second in sport class on my uni. it was very fun. i went with shaun miller, who placed first in pro. i won handle bars, which is terrible not funny considering i won them on a uni. the only reason i didnt compete in a higher class is because of the higher ups and rounded surfaces. i would have come in first, but i tried to put my seat back in from hopping, and got it caught on my pants right before the end of the section. i got a 5, totalling a 7 for the day out of twelve lines.
