Bike shops and their April Fools jokes

Every year there’s at least one company doing this. They never quite grasp the issue with just a bike saddle though.

Add some aero bars and it’d at least be rideable.

Jeesh… I’d have gone for one of those if they had done it with Dura Ace cranks instead of Ultegra…

So out of curiosity, assuming you had enough people ready to buy it, could you make a good quality carbon uni frame? If so would it be something that you can’t do Muni on and only road riding? Or since MTBs are made of carbon and get a lot more force in crashes it doesn’t matter and should be strong enough?

MTB frames don’t tend to collide with hard objects like a unicycle might do in the event of a UPD off-road.

If you think of the dings and scratches that muni frames often have - a carbon frame wouldn’t like that very much.

It’s been done though. There was the Koxx Karbon frame for trials, and at least one DIY effort with carbon tubes and aluminium plates holding them together.

You could, it only takes money.

Properly done, it should be able to handle Muni too, but you will have to add some weight for impact resistance. Assuming infinite money, carbon would enable you much more freedom in shapes and precisely getting stiffness how you want it (which would be more tricky to do with Alu).

As always, I think it depends on your definition of “Muni”, if your uni gets away from you uncontrollably in rock gardens a lot, probably not a great choice of material. If you ride mild trails in a mostly safe way, different story. (Similar on MTB, in Downhill Worldcups Aluminum seems to be there to stay, while carbon seems to be pretty much dominant in Cross country)

Let it not be forgotten!

I think this technology might be fun on a unicycle too.

I think after the seat, the worst thing is the horrible photoshop of it into the picture of the cyclist.

Who decided it should be done at such a weird scale?

How much impact does a uni frame actually get though? Think about it for a second. How often do you break a brake lever or bend a disc? The lower part of the frame is mostly shielded by the pedals and the cranks, while the upper part of the frame is mostly shielded by the saddle. The only area that’s really likely to be impacted regularly during upd’s is the crown and the area surrounding it and it seems that neoprene cover might fix that.

One other thing to consider is that a unicycle frame has much less material and a much simpler design than a bicycle frame. So replacing one isn’t as big a deal, provided supply chains ever get sorted out.

MUni frames can sometimes get some serious impacts. Most serious MUni riders have some battle scars they can show you on their unicycle frame.

People do this all the time, putting them on bars where they can hit the ground

Regarding replacing, have you seen how expensive frames are these days?

I know it’s a complete joke, but I have expensive taste and would totally buy a carbon road uni lol. If my current 29" build wasn’t as light as it was I’d get one.

I love this one

They’re a lot cheaper than bike frames. UDC oracles and Hatchets are in the $175 range while M41 Tecno run around 210 euro. Compared to a mid-range bike frame they’re cheap. A full suspension carbon bike frame can easily cost $2000. The problem with buying unicycle frames is the lack of availability.

Just saw this one - it’s OK funny wise. I’ll give it a B+ for some level of punning effort. Almost unicycle related.

Far too generous!
