Best Muni value?

I bought my first uni at a LBS about 6 months ago, it’s a 20" Torker LX and I put a 2.25" Maxxis MaxxDaddy tire and some odysee twisted pedals on it now that I’m learning tricks. I think it may be okay for a trials uni in the future, but I live in Colorado and want to start doing some Muni in the summer. That same LBS also sells a Torker DX 24" for like $275. Would that be my best Muni value if I’m on a budget or can you recommend something else? Also, what should I look for (tire size, features, etc)?

The torker DX Muni is the best uni to get on a budget.

It is a splined hub and crankset, and that is what you need when doing muni.

People will recommend the Qu-Ax, but you only save a little on the weight and will have about the same strengthed uni as a DX. I don’t think its worth the money to save a few ounces to a pound.

Mainly what to look for, is the wheelset. A splined wheelset is the strongest you can get. The Torker DX is splined, and very strong. Another thing too look for, is the frame. The old 2006 frame would brake, but the improvements made on the 2007 fixed that problem, so there is nothing to worry about now. Also, the clearance. Doing muni will get a lot of rocks, mud, dirt, anything stuck up into the frame. The Torker DX has PLENTY of clearances. =p

Another thing to look for is the tire. For muni, many people use a big fat 3inch tire. They are very nice, but a lot of people find them to be too big and slugish, and use a 2.6 tire, which is also a very nice size.

I’m starting to think that I’ll need a brake on it. Do you think it would be easier on the wallet to buy a brake seperately and add it on (to a 24" Torker DX) or do you know of a Muni that has everything I would need cheaper than that would run me?

I suggest not buying a brake. They are expensive, and require alot of maintenance. Also, unless you are doing lots of long, steep, untechnical trails they are hard to use effectively.

It looks like you do “natural trials”/Muni, what setup do you recommend?

I agree with mornish, don’t go for the brakes yet. It’s just as easy to install them later, and most people don’t use them that much.

The torker dx will be great for a muni for you. And since the torker dx has brake mounts on it you can install a brake on it sometime in the future if you feel the need and have the money. If you buy it you can also ask your lbs if he will match the price of the torker dx on unicycle.com. It is $260 there so you might be able to get $15 off. Hope I helped.

That’s my Muni, after I get the “Moment” for Christmas. That’ll never break, seriously.

What rim does it have? Apparently, the rim costs like $54. And 36 spokes is like $14.

Wow, that was a waste of time for me to figure out. I shoulda figured. How long did it take you to encode that?

Less than 10 seconds. Decode it again for my email address.

And the rim is a DX32. Forgot about that…

make sure the DX32 your getting is the 36 hole. =p

I’m riding a KH 20 wiht 140mm cranks. I’m really little(about 4’ 11"), and its awesome. For some time I’ve been considering going up to 24", but Ive been managing on my trials. The DX is the best value if you dont have alot to spend, but I’d probably go with a 2007 KH muni because of a number of things. I don’t especially like the seat on the DX(its fat and hard), its heavy(this isnt too much of a factor, but light unis are awesome), and I hate braking stuff, and I dont think they changed the frame on the 24". (yesterday I had to carry my uni all the way down a mountain because I broke the seatpost off).

The great things I like about the dx are:

great tire(I love 24 x 2.6 muni tires)

great crank length(I hate anything longer than 150, but some people are the opposite)

Cheap($200 - $250 for a splined muni isn’t much)
