Best average speed records

Ok cool. So, apart from the short cranks, what makes it a ‘race’ unicycle, capable of achieving those sorta speeds?

Nothing much really, the frame is a pre-production one so is slightly lighter and the tyre is lighter; but nothing much. I was differentiating it as much because I have 4 of them at the moment.

Roger

Ah right…Amazing average speed in that case! :astonished:

HOLY COW 17 average speed. Amazing skill!

Super performances by Juni and Roger. I forgot to include tyre pressure stats in my original post.

Riding with 110mm cranks would reduce wheel twitch allowing Roger to ride on high air pressure, i.e. a harder tyre resulting in more speed etc.

For my ride I was riding on 30 psi. When I use the 125mm cranks I’ll up the pressure to around 45 psi.

So what tyre pressure are you guys riding on ?

Max runout speed?

Wow, that’s 27.2km/h!! and sustained too!

I tried the 100m cranks for two test rides and I wasn’t faster, atually I was slower, as I had to dismount more and then had more failed mounts. But I could feel the potential even though I was’t ready for it last month (getting closer).

However, I guess I now know what is possible and what to shoot for. So I will try soon (maybe next week!).

A related question, as I haven’t encountered it yet: (I know it depends on the individual running speed, but I am a very good sprinter, 200-400m is my best distance), but about how fast is the run-out limit? On the one hand I would think it is faster than your maximum running sprint speed (as you don’t have to accelerate to that speed, but just control it). On the other hand maybe it’s lower, as you also have the added momentum of “falling down” as well as extra challenge and stress on the ankles/knees when you land of making sure you land/run straight, and well, because it is unexpected rather then planned like normla sprinting.

Plus, I didn’t quite find a real number for the max sprint speed. Do you calculate this from an average over a mile or the instantaeous maximum, e.g. from a 100m sprint? It seems like the instantaneous would be what you want. So if you take a really good 100m time of 10-12s, this is an average speed of 30-36km/h. As this is an average including the start of 0km/h, the instantaneous must be substantially higher. So I must be doing something wrong? From my feeling, I’m thinking something like 25km/h could be the limit (at least that’s when I start to get totally scared).

OK, for reference I looked it up on Wikipedia:

Based on this, a good sprinter should have a top speed of 30km/h. So is this reasonable for UPD runout speed?

65psi

For my 16km commute I have the max 65psi (For Munit I have the minimum 35psi or maybe even 25-30psi).

I ride at around 50psi on the roads. If I am riding offroads I let air out, never measured, but I think its anywhere between 40 and 45psi.

Yep! I tend to hold back a bit for fear of going over the front Recently I’ve begun to focus more on riding technique.

When the technique is good the mph goes up automatically.

I’ve begun relaxing the calves on the up stroke and trying to make balance corrections using the forward pedal strokes rather than applying backward pressure.

That’s an incredibly fast average for 26 miles on a non-geared 36er!

It really is! Roger, you’re a machine! I thought Juni and Mr Goan on Strava were the fastest guys I’d heard of…

And to answer the above, I run at about 50psi, and just re-inflate my tyre to that when it feels a bit too squishy in my fingers. My sweet spot seems to be a few days after the 50psi pump-up, so maybe about 40-45. Otherwise the hard tyre just bounces all over the place and slows me down.

This is with a TA tyre, not a Nightrider. Not a clue how that changes things (the TA is rated at only 32psi, so maybe running it as high pressures as I do changes its characteristics badly?)

That’s an interesting thread to read. I never thought myself as a fast rider on the road because I am not striving for it and a 29er isn’t as good as a 36 or guni in this department.

However, reading the first page or so, I realized I have a decent average speed on my commute with 3 noticeable climbs. I am covering the 9 miles in about 45 minutes so 12mph (the speed sign was right  ).

Setup: KH29, 125mm cranks, 60psi & a shadow bar.

I decided to log a one mile ride, just so I had a one mile average…

One Mile
36er Oracle (Un-geared)
125mm Cranks
45psi
Nightrider Tyre
KH Handlebar
13.3mph

I will try one mile to have better estimation, but up to now I had around 10mph on my metric century ride https://www.strava.com/activities/261650531 and this is what I usually assume when I’m commuting.
And the best I had recorded was 10km race on last Unicon https://www.strava.com/activities/174510489 with average of 15mph.
Both done on my G26.

Depends on the terrain. I average slightly over 20km/hr over 10km on my standard (24x125mm)

12mph on a 24"??

Then again, I’ve seen how fast you standard riders pedal. Being able to keep that speed up for longer than a 100m sprint is absolutely insane! You make me want to clean and setup my crappy ol’ 24" and see how fast I can spin it

Quick math and it’s about 174 rotation per minute! That’s plain insane! And super impressive.
Above 80 and I begin to fly off the pedals!

Or to put it another way, just a hair under 3 revs per second. To keep that pace for 100 yards let alone 10k is literally beyond belief.

That was my first 10km race in the standard.

Christoph did over 21km/hr

Wow Ken, I see a couple ladies were even faster! Amazing! :astonished:
