Best air saddle cover

Greetings,

I have been riding so much that I now ‘NEED’ an air saddle! Doctors orders, yes really…

I am going to buy the custom converted Miyata from unicycle.com (unless anyone has a better suggestion) and I am not sure which cover to use. I am thinking I might like either the the Roach or the leather cover but I wanted to ask people who are using air saddles what they think. So… anyone using a Roach or leather saddle cover on a Miyata air saddle? How’s the ride? I am looking for the one that allows for the least amount of pressure on both my bung and my boys.

Now that I have to place an order, I am going to buy my five year old son his first Uni. I am quite pleased and expect he will be really surprised. He wants a Uni just like is big sister and his Papa (grinning from ear to ear). Also, I might like to buy a video that shows a wide range of Uni skills such as mounting, idling and hopping, and maybe some basic MUni or Trials examples. Any suggestions on a good video? I already have Intro. to Unicycling.

Thank you all in advance, and keep the weel rolling.

The pressure on the crotch depends mostly on the pressure in the tube of the airseat, not the cover material. I have Gemcrest vinyl, Roach nylon, and ReeCycle nylon airseat covers. They are all equally comfortable. The Gemcrest looks the nicest but probably breathes the least. The ReeCycle was the easiest to install but I don’t know if it wears better or worse than the Roach.

Re: Best air saddle cover

Harper,

Thanks. I wasn’t sure if one cover was more rigid or less comfortable
over the other.

Re: Best air saddle cover

I used the Roach cover for a year then switched to the Gemcrest leather one
about 6 months ago. I prefer the leather one as is seems to be more
resistant to damage. Both are equally comfortable. I also like how the
leather one feels after you accidentally drop it in a river - dries off very
fast and feels perfect.

Once I gave my wife my old Muni that has a air seat with Roach cover she
won’t ride her Miyata 24 anymore. These air seats are SO much better than
anything else out there (although they are expensive).

The videos you need are “One Wheel No Limit” and “Universe”. Must haves.

hey Nathen, how do you keep your leather cover tight against the underside of the CF plate?and around the Reeder?

i have one but havent used it yet and that draw string that it comes with does’nt look like it would hold it strong like the clips of the Miyata base or the strap/eyelits on the Roach.

I don’t know if it is a better suggestion, but… With the new Miyata
durability as it is, I wasn’t sure if the Miyata air seat is the best
choice. I for one have decided to wait for the Velo KH seat. Someone
on this group (r.s.u. I mean) tested or at least tried it and said
that it matched the comfort of an air seat - or words to that effect.
But it will probably not be out before “end of summer”.

I had a local cobbler put some eyelets in the sides of the Gemcrest seatcover.
I use shoelaces to keep the leather cover tight against the CF plate. I did the
same with my Roach cover. I prefer the Roach cover because it takes a much
larger volume.

Jason -

If you are riding a lot(like all day), go leather all the way. I have over 600 Coker miles on my leather cover, and I love it. I have roach (nylon) covers on my trials uni and munis and they are fine in those applications.

Jagur -

The draw string is on there for decoration. I put my own grommets on both my leather and roach(nylon) covers. You can buy the kit to put grommets in at nearly any hardware store for about $10. They’re both on tight with shoelaces and they haven’t moved since the day I put them on.

Here are pictures of the kit and installations:

If you couldn’t tell, that nylon cover has been to hell and back a few times. One grommet has pulled out, but given what it’s been through I’m not complaining. It still holds fine without it.

Since I was taking pictures, I also snapped a few pictures of me sitting on my 20" monty with a Reeder handle installed. I just read a post from like February where you (Jagur) were asking for these. At the time there was some concern that the handle looked a bit phallic. I think the pictures should clear this up:

i put eyelits in my roach cover no problem cause there’s more material to work with.so before i go and do it to a $40 dollar leather cover let me make sure,is the leather one that you(gbarnes)put holes in the same size i have?its bigger than a miyata but not as big as a Roach…right?

i ask cause i know there is a bigger leather one in the making and i dont want to stab holes in mine if its not the same size as the one in those photo’s.

also, what do you have stuffed in it?20 inch tube?folded over pillow?or just a tube?

thanks

Re: Best air saddle cover

On the Roach cover, I used the exact same tool that George posted the
picture of to make eyelets - I’ve used 3 per side and 5 per side. Just lace
up with a string.

On the leather cover, I have had no problems just using the drawstring plus
the fact that the cover gets pinched between the Wilder bracket and the CF
base. I haven’t had to use the eyelets yet, but I’m sure that would work
fine too. That drawstring may look wimpy, but actually it’s nylon and won’t
break. The only hard thing is getting enough grip to actually tie it tight.

Jagur -

I have one of the tall leather saddle covers, probably not what you have. Last I knew, these were NOT yet available from Unicycle.com. I kind of had to beg to get the one sample that was sent to them from the UK.

I’m sure the drawstring is plenty strong… I just didn’t thing it’d ever be tight enough all the way around to secure the cover when the OEM handle wasn’t used.

hey,gbarnes

thats what i thought,i might just have to send mine back.nobody every told me that it was smaller than the Roach.im sure it would work fine but its so nice to have my Roach cinched down and not going anywhere.

i sure wish i could sit on leather though, mmmmm leather

Jagur -

I don’t know how small the other leather covers are… you might put the dog bone in there, set it on the seat base, and see if there is enough material to install grommets.

I’m not sure when unicycle.com will have the bigger covers. I’ve never seen the smaller ones, but I really like the big size. As I understand it, their going to be more expensive too… it takes more cow to make the bigger covers.

more Euro cow that is!

one thing is for sure the Gemcrest leather sure does smell nice…i cant wait to sit on it naked, right Klass?i know your in…Sendhair how bout you?

I took the quick ‘n’ dirty route with my leather covers and just glued them
on to the CF base. No faffing around with eyelets or draw strings - just
slap on some contact adhesive round the edges and leave to set. No problems
at all. If your airseat gets a flat (only happened to me once so far) you
have to pull the cover off and glue it back on. Apart from that it’s worked
for me no sweat. The leather covers are really great… but then I’ve never
tried a Roach one yet.

winces Thanks for that.

Well, ya see… don’t be jealous, now… actually, I’m way ahead of you!
I’ve made these really comfy briefs out of chamois… mmmmm! So, anywhere I go, I’m sitting naked on leather!

But you’re a Munier, right, Jagur? Your inner thighs should be well on their way towards leathery, eh? I guess it’s just a matter of which is softer, your butt or your saddle cover. Don’t forget the mink oil!
