Back from a ride

Just got back from a 17 mile jaunt on the cokers with Leo, Joe and Paul,
well Leo wasn’t on a coker, he was on a 29er, but the other three of us
were on cokers.

Twas undulating, the road bits were lovely, quiet country lanes, nice
views, blue sky etc etc. The villages had stone churches, duck ponds and
village greens. The off road bits were muddy, slimey, slippery and
some times good fun. Paul did a bit further than Leo or I as he avoided a
muddy section with a long road detour. Joe did loads futher than the rest
of us as he chose to ride into Basingstoke at the end adding another 8/9
miles to his trip.

Rounded it all off with a pub lunch and yarned about the riding we had
done over the winter and sketched out plans for more rides in the same
area when its dried up a bit. There is an interesting looking Bridle way
along a roman road…

Roll on the summer.

That was the first outing for my IRC Notos 29" tyre that I bought from Gary
Fisher (used) at last years 24 hour race. It is definately more of an
off-road tyre that the WTB Nanoraptor that I’d tried before.

If I were intending to use my 29 as a road cycle I’d put the WTB tyre back
on. It is more intended as a fast X-country cycle (with this year’s Red Bull
24 hour race a particular target).

There didn’t appear to be much of a speed difference with a 29" on 5" cranks
compared to Cokers on 36" cranks, though I’d have lost out more on a flat
road ride.

I think I’ve changed my mind about toe-clips for off-road though, it was
just too much of a pain to freemount in the mud.

could you explain this point a little more?

Hmm I think I meant 6" cranks (visualising 36" cranks makes my brain hurt).
