I have a special interest in Unicycling and I had it since I was a kid.
Just recently I created a YouTube channel and one of the content pillars is just unicycling for fun.
I’m going to periodically upload videos of me Unicycling. It’s especially fun when I was able to unicycle in a Las Vegas Casino, or on a frozen lake or in the Utah Salt flats. I’ve separated them out into a playlist for this channel.
Welcome to the forum
If you gravitate to unicycling on ice, you should treat yourself with a studded tire, in my opinion. Particularly if you have the possibility to do it regularly during the winter.
Just dont make the same mistake as me. The studded tire was horrible on cambered roads which is all of them! It was also narrower making it harder to ride in snow and the studs added a considerable amount of resistance making me much slower.
I used a Schwalbe Marathon Winter during this winter and it did just fine (29x2, I think the tire in the videos of the OP is in the same ball park as far as the width is concerned). No problems with camber (and I’m quite susceptible to this), no exaggerated rolling resistance. The amount and placement of studs is perfect for city (road) use in my opinion. I felt that I didn’t have the same grip as on dry tarmac when twisting the uni. But when riding it on an even icy surface (even if inclined) I didn’t slip once. It’s not a tire that I would use on a rough icy surface, though - that’s what I have my muni with a studded fat tire for.
I think i also had some sort of Schwalbe. The 24"/75 mm setup might be somewhat to blame for the slow speeds in the snow. During those rides i had an average speed of around 11 kmh while once the snow cleared and i switched back to my almost slik tire i could easily hold 16+ kmh average.
The studs might also not be doing too much for me as in used to unstudded tires on ice and snow.
Wow, you are heavy into terminology that I’m simply unaware of. I haven’t gotten to get into this hobby as much as I’d like. Too many other things going on, like working for a living and such.
Riding a unicycle on ice? Never before this winter. The thought of doing this was pretty scary. But with the right equipment it’s very doable and actually a lot of fun. There’s no guarantee not to fall when using studded tires, but the chances are reduced greatly.
@DR_T I like your enthusiasm while riding. For me my first 2 meters of unicycling were the best. Free hands, heading straight into the room and noticing that it really works.
