ANN: British Unicycle Convention 9 Timetable - Finally

I think Douglas Adams says it best:

‘‘What’s this?’’ whispered Max, wild-eyed, ‘‘what’s happening?’’

At the back of the Restaurant the stony-faced party from the
Church of the Second Coming of the Great Prophet Zarquon leapt
ecstatically to their feet chanting and crying.

Max blinked in amazement. He threw up his arms to the audience.

‘‘A big hand please, ladies and gentlemen,’’ he hollered, ‘‘for the
Great Prophet Zarquon! He has come! Zarquon has come again!’’

Thunderous applause broke out as Max strode across the stage and
handed his microphone to the Prophet.

Zarquon coughed. He peered round at the assembled gathering. The
stars in his eyes blinked uneasily. He handled the microphone
with confusion.

‘‘Er …’’ he said, ‘‘hello. Er, look, I’m sorry I’m a bit late.
I’ve had the most ghastly time, all sorts of things cropping up
at the last moment.’’

He seemed nervous of the expectant awed hush. He cleared his
throat.

‘‘Er, how are we for time?’’ he said, ‘‘have I just got a min-’’

And so the Universe ended.

It’s on the website below.

Is that “it’s” as in “it is”, or as in “it will be soon”, or did the
universe just end before you uploaded ?

When I make these posts, I upload first and check I can see the stuff.
Evidently you did not look first. :-p

Didn’t realise the clitic 's could stand in place of ‘will be soon’. Check
out the thread on the language police.

See you tomorrow evening?

Quote direct from website (now)… :

Timetable
The Convention opens for business at 4:00 pm on Friday 19th April. It is
being held at a school and early arrivals are not likely to be appreciated
by the staff, though I’m sure the kids will be more than happy about any
distractions.

The unicycle ceilidh/barn dance will start at 7:30 pm, so that gives you
plenty of time to pitch your tent and whatnot.

A more detailed timetable will follow shortly…

I just clicked on the link (at 22:06 BST) and the site is there.

David

Seems a bit strange Leo, I checked the site during lunch yesterday right after I read the first post and the site had the full timetable then. Possibly a browser page refresh problem?

Then be careful not to submit it to Language Interpol. In Dutch* one
says “It’s raining tomorrow”. The phrase “It will rain tomorrow” is
formally correct but sounds overly pompous.

  • “Het regent morgen”
    “Het zal morgen regenen”
