A broken Savage

I have a 24" Savage that I bought probably 4 years ago. Recently the left crank
loosened and won’t tighten. ( I replaced the cotter pin, no help) I took the
crank off and it turns out the spindle was worn and needed to be replaced. I
took it to the bike shop where I got it and they said that Savage changed their
design so they couldn’t get a new spindle. I got a quote of $30 dollars to have
a new one machined and installed, but is it worth it. The unicycle only cost me
about $100 so, I am thinking I might be better off to just buy a new and better
uni. What do you think? Do I spend the $30 to fix my savage or invest in a
better Uni? If the latter what do brands do you suggest? Jeff Sargeant |–()

The ultimate solution is to do both. If the old Savage can be salvaged, it might
be used by others to learn to ride. How bad would it be if you jammed the crank
on there? Good enough for learning?

A more extreme possibility is to weld it on, something they used to do in the
old Pontiac club. But don’t do that unless you know you’ll never rebuild the
wheel again, or replace bearings.

My favorite uni is the Miyata <www.miyatausa.com> but it’s not cheap. There are
other good brands out there, and still a lot of Schwinns floating around in bike
shops (though out of production).

Re: A broken Savage

In my opinion, it’s worth repairing. I don’t think I would go so far as to build
a new wheel. Maybe just weld the crank to the axle and use it as a trainer. I
think you’re ready for a new uni though. I’ve checked out most of them on the
market and in my opinion, you’ve entered the market at an ideal time. It depends
on what size wheel you’re interested in, as to what brand to consider. If your
Savage is a 24", I would graduate to a 26" (just because). Miayata, Sem (deluxe
model), DM (British), and Schwinn, in that order, are high on my list of
favorite 24". In the 26" catagory I like my new Pashley Muni really well. I
understand that DM is manufacturing a very good 26", but havn’t yet seen it in
real life. New to my attention is a 26" (or 700c) Muni called the Telford.
Believe me, I intend to look it over very closely, as it looks radical but just
may be a very smooth ride and practical. One of my favorite uni’s is a 28"
manufactured by Tom Miller of The Unicycle Factory, (The place for unicycles and
parts). There is also a new 34" air tired big wheel from Coker Tire Co, that’s
got my eye. There are many more good uni’s out there. Like I said, You’ve
entered the market at a very good time. Have fun shopping! Mike

I had a savage 20" that broke So I got a new Miata and am enjoying the Miata a
lot more the seat’s more comfterble and the cranks don’t squeak any more from
loose cotter pins. So I’d say go with a Miata
