5th Open German Unicycle Championship

I’ve received a brochure announcing the 5th Open German Unicycle
Championship, at the Berufsschule Sporthalle in Bottrop, Germany, from
24 through 26 October 1997. The brochure is in German, and I made some
mistakes when I tried to translate last year’s brochure, so caveat
emptor on the following:

    The schedule of events is:

Friday 24-Oct-1997

Registration Obstacle course (starts at 1700)

Saturday 25-Oct-1997 (starting time: 0900)

    100 m race 400 m race 4 x 100m relay race
    1500/800 m race (outside) (individually timed, run from 0930 - 1400)
         Awards Ceremony

Sunday 26-Oct-1997 (starting time: 0900)

30m wheelwalk race 35m one foot race Individual Freestyle Pairs
    Freestyle Group Freestyle Awards Ceremony

The events are run in accordance with IUF rules, with one conspicuous
exception: the 1500/800 m race is the only one in which 24" tires may be
used. A 20" limit is applied to all other races!

All events, except the 1500/800 m race, are held indoors; metal pedals
    aren't allowed. (I think there's a non-marking tire rule, too.) Gloves
and kneepads are required in the races. There's a 125mm crank length
limit on 24" tires, and a 114 mm limit on 20" tires.

Registration is 30 DM, payable by 01-Oct-1997. Lodging is avaliable
Friday and Saturday nights: 5 DM/person/night in a gym hall (not the
same as the competition sport hall, by the way) or 15

DM/person/night in a youth hostel. Breakfast (at least, I think that’s what
Fruehstueck means) Saturday and Sunday is 5
DN/person/meal. Conventional hotel rooms are also available in Bottrop.

There are many more details in the brochure, but, as I mentioned above,
they require better translation than I can provide. *Last year's*
brochure, in German, is available on the Web at:

http://spectrum.Mathematik.HU-Berlin.DE/~stroess/unicycle/dm96.html

I had a great time when I attended this event last fall. I hope we can
get a few more people from the US (and elsewhere) to attend this year. I
must stress, however, the importance of preregistration: there was no
provision for on-site registration last year. I cannot tell from this
year's brochure whether that policy is still in effect, so your best bet
is to register ahead of time. Of course, to get a good air fare you'll
have to buy ahead of time, too.

A note on payment: Within Germany, payment by bank wire transfer is
common, but may be relatively costly when attempted from the USA. On the
other hand, cashing US personal checks can be costly on the German side.
If several people are coming from the USA, perhaps we can pay together
to reduce relative the overhead, as for last year's Unicon.

Thanks for the info, it was very interesting to see what is happening:
more please.

This comment about the exception to the rules, made me go and look at the rules
(it is quite a big exception isn’t it!, here speaks a unicyclist who doesn’t own
a 20" uni and rides in a club where 20" uni’s are very much in the minority),
but totally understandable with all the events being inside. The rule states…

2.1.4 WHEEL SIZES: Except where noted otherwise, all wheel sizes are maximum
24". Additional groups for young riders with 16" or 20" wheels can be added.
These age groups should allow for riders of those ages to also ride 24"
wheels with older riders, hence the 0-13 (24") group. All riders in age
groups between 0 and 10 will race 800m (instead of 1500), 10m Wheel Walk,
and 10m Ultimate Wheel, if used. For these age groups there may also be
different distances for certain other races, such as UMX and Marathon. Also
see section 2.3.

QUESTION?

what has section 2.3 got to do with wheel size?

3.3 DRESS: Riders must wear shoes, kneepads and gloves (definitions in sec.
1.19). In some events, a helmet is required. The Referee has final say on
whether a rider=92s safety equipment is sufficient. Helmets and elbow pads are
also good considerations for safe unicycle racing. The Starter will remove
from the starting line-up any riders not properly equipped to race, including
riders with dangerously loose shoelaces.

shouldn’t the ref be 2.21 which talks about the exact size of the wheel?
