48 Spoke DM

The DM web site lists their Hockey Unicycles as having 48 spoke axles. See
http://www.lds.co.uk/dmunicycles/hockey.htm I wasn’t aware of a commercially
available 48 hole axle. Can we get a hold of these axles individually? Are they
good axles? Sounds like a good possibility to increase wheel strength for
Mountain Unicycles. I checked and there are several good downhill/tandem 48 hole
rims for around $50. If anyone has any info or if anyone has used these axles,
please share it!

That would be excellent! Looks like the Brits are going to dominate the Mountain
Unicycling effort (I suppose in a large part due to Roger’s work). John Foss and
I have discussed the problem of getting Mountain Unicycling more mainstream and
have come to the conclusion that until there is a high-end model available, it
won’t happen. It seems that the Mountain Biking “fad” is being driven by
equipment more than the hobby itself. Case in point: I have seen literally
hundreds of mountain bikes on the purdue campus that are worth over $1000, and
there isn’t a single legal trail that is over a few miles long within an hours
drive from here (and even those aren’t any good). People just want a cool
looking bike, they don’t want to ride it. I don’t expect mountain unicycling to
ever get as popular as mountain biking is, but I think that it could easily
become somewhat common place. The catch is that nobody is going to make unis
until the market becomes big, and the market can’t become big until someone
makes a good uni. Pashley’s muni was the first step in this process, and
hopefully DM will make a superior product that will be the second step. I’m
looking forward to it!

I have just got back from the British Juggling Convention where I had a talk
with Dave. A few things first, DM hubs that he manufactures himself are superb.
I would rate them above the Miyiata (this is on hear-say rather than any
scientific testing). From experience, I know he generally does not sell them
separately. I talked to Dave about possibly manufacturing a 26" off road
unicycle, I hope he takes up my suggestion as his uni’s have the potential to
make excellent, ruggid machines. If he did do this then it would surely have the
48 spoke hub. It would place a model between the Pashley and the CF uni.

Re: 48 Spoke DM

I talked to Dave again also at the convention. The is still unpersuaded to
venture into the market - he says he can make lighter frames if need be but is
unsure of the market place. He is however pleased that Roger’s are “made in
Britain”. If you want Dave to make you a mountain unicycle I suggest you
ring/email him and quote your specifications.
e.g. His cheaper (lighter) 28" frame 48 or 36 spokes, a rim of your choice and a
Viscount saddle.

I’ve got a 48 spoke hub on my 20" hockey/tricks unicycle but won’t be tempted to
incorporate it in a Muni until I successfully damage my 36 hole version.
