36" Coker Wheel Set

I have two brand new 36" Coker Wheel Sets. They have 48 spokes and are double walled. I bought them in 2018 for $128USD per wheel set. I don’t think they sell the wheel sets anymore, and I retired my Coker so I have no need for the wheel sets and would like to sell them for what I paid plus shipping.

Maybe @HardcoreCokerRider is interested? He likes heavy wheels, and a double wall rim, 48 spokes wheel sounds about right…

Although I recently bought a 36" wheel set that I plan to make heavier, your wheel sets do indeed seem interesting. I haven’t really kept up with the progression of 36" wheels since probably around 2010 or so. Would you happen to know the answers to any of the following questions:

  • Where in NY are you located? I’m in NY too.
  • Do the wheel sets have the narrow or wide hubs?
  • Are the hubs aluminum or steel?
  • I think UDC claimed that the 36" rims they currently sell are the strongest available (perhaps excluding the carbon rims?). Do you know how your rim compares to my old Airstream rim and/or my newer Nimbus Dominator 2 rim in terms of strength?
  • Do you know how much the wheel set weighs?
  • Do you know if the current the current 36’ tires that are being sold will fit on your wheel set? I think I remember reading on here somewhere that not all 36’ tires fit on all 36" rims. However, I have several older tires, so this may not be a problem for me.

Sorry to ask so many questions, but having just recently purchased a wheel set, I would need more information in order to make an informed decision. Thanks!

I am south of Rochester in Mendon, NY. The wheel set measures roughly 5 'inches from bearing to bearing, and does not have a mount for disc brakes. My Nimbus Oracle measures roughly 5 inches with a disc brake mount. My Kris Holm measures roughly 4 inches bearing to bearing with a disc brake mount. These are steel rims and hubs. I use Coker tires on both the Coker v2 and the Nimbus Oracle, and will eventually replace the tire on the Kris Holm with a Coker tire. I had a box with two of these rims shipped to me and the weight was 18.7 lbs for the two rims and shipping box. So each rim is probably about 8 lbs. 36"x2 1/4 tires will fit on the rims, and I wasn’t aware of some 36" rims not accepting 36x2 1/4 tires. Not sure what shipping costs would be today, but if you can pick it up you will save a lot because shipping costs that I am finding thru FedEx, UPS, and USPS are outrageous. I also decided to list this on eBay, shipping is around $60 depending on your location for the two wheel sets.

The wheel set (rim, spokes & hub, without the tire and tube) I recently purchased weighs approximately 5.85lbs, so if your wheel set truly weighs at least 8lbs, that extra couple of pounds and some ounces would be somewhat enticing for me to use as a heavier wheel that I can swap out with my Coker that has the wider (125mm) hub, which is the size hub that it sounds like you have on your wheel sets. Since I’m already building a heavier wheel Coker (with a 100mm hub), I don’t really need to have another heavy wheel, but it is the holiday season, so I may want to splurge and give myself a gift!
The outrageous shipping cost could be problematic. Not sure if eBay shipping would be $60 to NYC or how they would be able to offer a much lower price for shipping than all the major companies, but if the shipping cost is reasonable, I would consider purchasing one of your wheel sets. I am in Manhattan, NYC, so if you can confirm the eBay shipping cost (for one wheel set), that would be helpful. If shipping is exorbitant I might consider driving to Albany to meet you if you were willing to do so, but anything further than that would make the cost of gas outweigh any savings on the wheel set. Even just driving to Albany and back probably wouldn’t make much sense financially, but I’m thinking I would find something to do there and make a trip out of it somehow.

Does anyone know anything about the strength of the steel wheel sets that are posted for sale in this thread versus the strength of the aluminum Airstream rim and/or the aluminum Nimbus Dominator 2 rim? Any info would be much appreciated. If the deal is right, I would be inclined to purchase a wheel set even if the steel rim isn’t as strong as the aluminum rims, as long as it’s stronger than my original steel rim Coker. The wider hub and greater number of spokes should make the wheel sets that are for sale stronger than some other configurations, so even if the rim itself is weaker than the aluminum rims on my 36ers, it seems like the for-sale wheel sets could be equally strong or stronger than a wheel set that has a stronger rim, but a narrower hub and fewer spokes. But I’m not very knowledgeable about this stuff, so I’m really just speculating.

The two wheel sets just sold on eBay.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. Glad you were able to sell them quickly and easily.
