3 Way Tie on Jeopardy

You misspelled “mazel tov”, you schmuck! Oy veh.

Thanks, I will check out those sites.

If you tell me exactly what you mean by “the pavlovs” I will know better whether or not I need them.

Congrats!

Thanks, but I’m a vegetarian and I really don’t need any natural enhancers, particularly those made from endangered species. And I’m not sure what this has to do with Jeopardy! anyway.

Hah sorry. The pavlovs, as people on those boards call them, are basically little cheat clues for the show. For instance the majority of times that Johannes Brahms is the question the clue will reference his work ‘Lullaby’ so many people will first scan the clue for that word, and if they see it will stop reading and wait for the Alex to stop reading so they can buzz in at just the right time. There’s a whole long list of them. Of course you may need to know other things about brahms. But if the clue says something like “This blah blah blah lullaby composer blah blah blah” you have the answer right there.

Here’s the full list from the people at Jboard. Apparently it was posted over on the Sony Jeopardy Forums until everything got deleted and they started the boards over again.

I know that feeling.

My wife and I disagree about the degree to which this makes impure the honor that would be being a Jeopardy! contestant. But we both agree that I should have a look.

Oh absolutely I’m still not sure how I feel about them. I think something to consider, is you’re not going to be able to cover everything in your study(assuming you do any studying). But if nothing else it can be good to memorize them if you have a weak spot. For instance, a lot of contestants are horrible at Opera. Yet some variation of Opera comes up on the show fairly often. I’m not a great J! player yet I have ran an opera category on more than one occasion watching the contestants blank stare through 4 of the 5 questions purely on my memorization of the pavlovs.
It’s sort of like studying for the test, rather than just knowing a lot of general knowledge, which is what Jeopardy likes to portray its contestants as knowing, but if you really dig down into it you really can study the important things and do great on the show while not knowing quite a bit of things.

But know that the in person audition is 100% based on personality, and from what I’ve heard, if you just do what they say, and stick to it during the in person audition you have a higher chance of getting picked. I’ve heard that they are basically just looking for someone that is good at listening to directions and not trying to do their own thing.

Congratulations, Raphael on your Jeopardy success! Do keep us posted. For a long time Jeopardy has been the only major game show that actually has a focus on hard questions. Every once in a while I get lucky, and get Final Jeopardy right while all three contestants get it wrong.

They absolutely are. I used to make fun of the comparison between Jeopardy contestants and then the Wheel of Fortune contestants (that show traditionally follows Jeopardy here). It’s like the contestants are picked from two completely different gene pools. Not that the Wheel players aren’t smart–but they are loud, boisterous, enthusiastic, etc. Jeopardy contestants are like professional golfers; very low key. Keep it calm, cool and collected, since it is a TV show, remember it’s probably more audition than quiz.

Amazing! congrats Raphaël! I’m sure you’ll go throught this “fingers in the nose” as we say around here.
Too bad there’s no chance I can catch the show while it’s aired.
