What is a good 26" fat tire.
Good for what?
I rode the Kenda Juggernaut. It’s light for its size and I think it has a comparably low rolling resistance. It is not very susceptible to road camber. The tread is not deep, yet it coped surprisingly well in snow (either compressed or up to about of rather heavy fresh snow). I think it fared also well when riding over (dry) roots. So, yes I can recommend it, but I‘m not a hardcore downhiller.
Is 26x4 the frame width imposed limit, or is it your personal preference, or just the first tire size that came to your mind, or…?
At the moment I run the Dillinger 5 (26x4.6) and am quite happy with its performance on snow and ice. I might still try a different studded tire next winter, but mostly to see if they get better, than out of necessity.
I do mostly dirt trail riding.I built a frame and i have a 26 by 4 tire in it right now.I think i would like something with deep tread.
Don‘t go with the Schwalbe Jumbo Jim, would be the only advice I can add, then.
Can we see pictures of your frame / uni, pleaaaaase?
We went to a local bike shop and got a 4 in wide bike rim and i made some bushings to hold a bmx bike shaft and built the frame around it.Im trying to decide if i want to try studding the tire.
Hatchet style, looks really cool! If I was you I‘d look for a more modern seat post clamp, though . Your frame is not as massive as the Hatchet‘s - do you feel any flex caused by the horizontal part of the frame?
You say you have a 4“ (100mm) wide rim? Then your tire should be wider than 4“… I run my 4“ and 4.6“ wide tires on a 60mm or 65mm wide rim (Marge Lite). Maybe 80mm would be more appropriate for the wider of the two tires, but for the mild muni I do I‘d rather err on the narrow side as far as the rim goes. The tire is rounder and less affected by auto steer (and I think by camber, too). However it doesn‘t cope as well with bad landings when sideways hopping, but that is not an issue for me, given my riding style.
EDIT: ok, maybe I was a bit too fast with my assessment about the rim and tire combination - it is recommended by Schwalbe, according to the following chart.
https://bike.bikegremlin.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/tyre-rim-width-compatibility-recommendation.png Still, if I had the choice I‘d go for a tire that is wider than the rim.
I should have said we get a rim and tire.Im not sure how wide the rim is.I never felt any flex.I would like to make it out of aluminium.
