150 Miles in 1 Day for my 59th!

Sweet ride Terry, congrats!

Outstanding!
Don’t you find it surreal to be passing so many people who are just having a regular day while you’re on an epic battle of body and mind? I don’t know how many people have ever ridden 150 miles on a uni in a day, but I’m assuming it’s significantly less than one in a million. Anyone who saw you probably would guess you were riding a few miles… maybe 10.

Thanks guys!

@Mark & Sam: I am hoping to try for the 24hr/200 sometime in June, when we have the most daylight, and least nighttime hours. Hopefully the weather will be on the cool side, but in June that may not happen. Fingers crossed!

@Buzz: Funny you mentioned that! I think the only people that had any idea that I might be doing a long ride, were people working outside who kept seeing me go by every hour or so, and a lifeguard who was just closing his station for the day, and said he had noticed me riding “all day” since he first got there in the morning. At that point I had already done several out & backs.

Curious about your knees. Any issues there?

Surprisingly no. But sometimes I feel a little knee pain within the first 5-10 miles, but then it goes away. The only real discomfort I have is in my neck from being in the same position for hours on end, but for this ride it was almost non existent, mainly because as soon as I felt any pain coming on, I took a couple motrin and it seemed to nip it in the bud. Overall this was one of the most pain-free long rides I’ve had, luckily.

Terry, fun fact, our birthdays are on the same day (15th) so hope you had a happy one.

However I’m actually replying to say that I found this ride particularly inspiring for some reason. My goal this year is to ride more (as it always is), but I think I want to add a century ride to my list of rides to do after seeing this and now that my Guni project is nearly completed.

Thanks for being cool.

Happy belated birthday Killian! And good luck on your century, I’m sure you will have a great ride! Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks terry. My planned route won’t be melted off until may or June so it’ll be a while. I’ve also got very little training in, only riding muni twice a week and no road riding in nearly a year. I’m hoping the guni will change that.

Great video Mr P
No upd’s ! You’re the Boss.
and the UDC T - shirt looks good on you

Congrats! I’m very new to riding but what I noticed most in your video is how smooth your pedal motion is. Almost like you are on 2 wheels!

Happy Late Birthday!

Thanks again guys & gals!

@Chigins: Yes I try to work on smooth spinning technique. It reduces fatigue and increases efficiency, and the shorter cranks help to minimize wheel wobble.

@Alucard: Yeah, the new UDC shirt is really nice and wicks well.

@Killian: A geared 36er sounds at once exciting and scary! Too fast for me, or at least I’d be tempted to “see what she could do”! But it seems to be the most awesome way to do long rides on a 36er! let us know how it goes!

Nah, I tried a G36 once and that was enough for me. I’ll be on a G29, probably shooting for May or June ride time. I think I’ll make it interesting and throw in a 5000 ft. climb too.

Hey Terry! What a cool way to celebrate your birthday! I always love your videos (I just don’t have the time and patience, as I’m sure you have to put in a lot of work both filming and then editing).

The saddle time sounds a little daunting for me, but it’s a great goal! Congratulations! (I just did my first ride with 100mm cranks on my 36er and it went well, see http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1644093&postcount=16)

And as always, you’ve found a great way to stay young! You’ve got a good head start on me, but I expect to be just as “crazy” for quite some time! As you already know, if you stay fit, age is almost entirely in your head (e.g. people who are like 30 who say they’re too old for this or that is just crazy, as far as I’m concerned). When I tell people I learned to unicylce in my mid thirties they are always surprized.

@MUCFreerider: Thanks, I enjoyed that write-up! I confess that I have not yet tried cranks shorter than 110mm on my 36er, but you have peaked my interest in trying them now! And yes, it always make me chuckle a bit when I hear from people only in their 30’s who thought they were too old to learn to ride a unicycle! I only wish I hadn’t waited until 50 to start again, but better late than never! And sometimes the best things happen in the second half! (or at least we can appreciate them more)

Hi Terry, You are a great inspiration. That helped me start unicycling last year, also at age 50.

I just learned that your birthday is the same date as my son’s. He just turned 22 on Jan 16. We both learned unicycling during the past year. On his [your] birthday, we went out together for a nice 3-mile unicycle ride.

I hope to be as young as you someday.

Huge respect man!

Wow, that is so great to hear! Happy belated birthday to your son! It’s so fantastic that you ride together too!

Thanks!

Amazing, I was good for 13 miles at 59, on a good day.
Keep it rolling Terry!

Congratulations! I was pretty proud of my half-mile the other day. Can’t imagine what it feels like to be able to keep going. And going. And going. Very inspirational!

Thanks guys!
