Alan Watts is fun to read, but even more so to listen to. I used to listen to him on WBAI and/or WFMU. He originally did lectures on the first Pacifica station, KPFA in Berkeley. There’s some free stuff here.
Zen has no content, so whatever you can say about Zen, you’re still off the mark. That’s why Zen cannot be in conflict with any organized religion–no content. It’s also quite common in the US to be a Zazen practitioneer and not be a Buddhist, so to speak.
